I will refer to myself in this discussion and my lack of experience and preparedness in the use of statistical quality tools. I have a basic lack of knowledge of most statistical quality tools and the correct use of these tools. My last two companies have had ELS departments (Enterprise Lean Sigma in my current organization). Any time I have needed any statistical quality tools (ie: Scatter diagrams, histograms, or control charts) I have needed to reach out to my ELS teams for assistance. The only statistical quality tools that I have used myself with any confidence are Pareto charts and fishbone diagrams. I do not believe that any specialized skills are needed to use statistical quality control tools effectively. However, the skill to interpret data, identify any trends, and the ability to draw meaningful conclusions will be extremely helpful for leaders using statistical quality control tools. I personally often find it challenging to interpret the data provided by statistical quality control tools. To benefit from the use of these tools, I need to be able to interpret the data correctly. Another challenge I see when using these tools is that the data used is either not accurate or not consistent. For instance, data when running product A may not apply when running product B, and the inclusion of that data will skew the results. Missing data is also a challenge when using statistical tools. I can use myself as an example of someone who has trouble at times understanding statistics, so I can relate what is helpful to me personally. I find that when someone is covering statistical information to me personally it is a benefit when it is made visual. Often I have trouble interpreting raw data but when that data is presented in a visual format it is easier for me to see patterns and trends. I find it especially helpful to ensure that the scales, labels, and legends used are simplified and not filled with unnecessary clutter. I also like it when the data progresses linearly and does not jump all over the place as far as relevance or order. I use what works for me when I present to others, and I believe it has assisted others to understand as well.
