I think the skills needed to effectively use statistical quality control tools are statistical thinking, being able to identify critical information, data analysis, problem-solving, and communication skills. In my opinion, the two most needed skills are statistical thinking and being able to identify critical information. Statistical thinking is a skill that requires a person to draw conclusions based on data and then make a decision. There are three concepts that statistical thinking is based on: all work occurs in a system of interconnected processes, all processes have variation, and the keys to success are understanding and reducing variation. Being able to identify critical information is important because one needs to be able to identify the critical operations that require inspection as well as critical product characteristics and whether they are a variable or an attribute. Once these two pieces of information are identified, the appropriate quality control tool can be selected. Challenges I have faces when using these tools include poor quality or incomplete data, complex statistical practices, not enough resources to implement into a process, and resistance to change. In my experience, data is kept in numerous places and there is not one group or individual in charge of maintaining, updating, and consolidating data into one location. This makes it difficult to have a complete and accurate data set. I think there is also a general lack of knowledge regarding statistical quality control tools and not everyone has the same level of a statistical background which makes it hard to interpret information. Lastly, the culture at my company is change adverse which makes it difficult to implement new tools without proper resources and support. If I were to communicate the results to someone who does not understand statistics I would try to simplify the concepts. I would avoid using technical terminology, I would provide visual aids such as a chart or graph, and I would provide context behind the analysis and results. Having the context will help the person understand why it is important to them and the organization as a whole.
