M5 Assignment (35 points)
Instructions:
Use this Word document to fill in the answers to the questions. The answers must be supported either by typing out the calculation process or by pasting SPSS
output or data as instructed. When prompted to
paste something from the SPSS
data or output file, you may use the copy/paste function or take a screen
shot of the relevant part to paste in as a picture.
Q1. Perform and Interpret a Two-Way ANOVA (17.5 points total, if SPSS output file is missing for this analysis, 50% of the total number of earned points will be deducted)
Use the Q1 worksheet in the data file for the following questions. This worksheet contains data adapted from a salary survey. The worksheet “Codebook” contains descriptions and values for the variables.
With this factorial ANOVA, we would like to know:
-Is basic marital status (married versus unmarried) a significant factor in salary?
-Is education a significant factor in salary?
-Is there a significant interaction between basic marital status and education in terms of salary?
A. Create an
SPSS
data file by importing the data set
and submit the data file with your assignment to earn this credit. Make sure the SPSS data file meets the following criteria:
- All variables are imported
- All variables are configured correctly in “Measure” under the “Variable View”
- The “Values” for the nominal variables should be specified
(1 point total: deduct .5 for each error up to 1 point total)
Run a 2x5 two-way ANOVA and then answer the questions in sections B, C, D, and E.
The main ANOVA output table must be pasted here to support all subsequent questions related
to statistical results in Q1. No credit is earned for those questions if the table is not pasted here.
Nelson Spring A 2024
B. The omnibus effect of the whole factorial ANOVA model.
1. Report the omnibus F-
test result in APA format including F, p, and partial
2
. (1.5 points, deduct .5 for each error.)
F
(9,140) = 24.415, p
< 0.001,
2
=0.611
2. Draw a conclusion from the hypothesis testing result and state the finding as supported by the result. (1 point. .5 regarding the null hypothesis, .5 regarding the conclusion/finding)
Reject the null hypothesis because p
< .05. There is a significant difference C. The main effect of basic marital status.
1. Report the test result on this main effect in APA format, including F, p, and partial
2
.
(1.5 points, deduct .5 for each error.)
F
(1, 140) = 1.316, p
=.253,
2
=.009
2. Draw a conclusion from the hypothesis testing result (reject or fail to reject the null) and state the finding supported by the result. -Finding must indicate HOW the factor affects the DV if it is a significant effect.
(1 point, .5 for hypothesis test result, .5 for finding)
The marital status has a significant effect on the salary. Married people were shown to have a higher salary than unmarried. The null hypothesis would be rejected because p <.05.
3.Create a bar graph and paste it to show the mean comparison within the main effect. Explain what the graph shows in terms of the main effect. (2 points total. No point earned if the graph is not pasted here.)
- Correct graph type (.5 point)
- Correct data (.5 point)
- Explanation of graph (1 point)
Nelson Spring A 2024
This bar graph shows the mean of salary compared from married to unmarried and each group is sorted by
education level.
D. The main effect of Education.
1. Report the test result on this main effect in APA format, including F, p, and partial
2
.
(1.5 points, deduct .5 for each error.)
F
(4, 140) = 48.230, p
<0.001,
2
=0.579
2. Draw a conclusion from the hypothesis testing result (reject or fail to reject the null) and state the finding supported by the result.
-Finding must indicate HOW the factor affects the DV if it is a significant effect.
(1 point, .5 for hypothesis test result, .5 for finding)
p
< 0.05 so we reject the null hypothesis. There is a significant difference
between education level and salary.
3.Create a bar graph and paste it to show the mean comparison within the main effect. Explain what the graph shows in terms of the main effect. (2 points total. No point earned if the graph is not pasted here.)
- Correct graph type (.5 point)
- Correct data (.5 point)
- Explanation of graph (1 point)

This bar graph shows that married people have a higher income at all educational levels.
E. The basic marital status x Education interaction effect
from the ANOVA.
1. Report the test result on the interaction effect in APA format including F, p, and partial
2
.
(1.5 points, deduct .5 for each error.)
F
(4, 140) = 54.40, p
= .845,
2
=0.10
2. Draw a conclusion from the hypothesis testing result (reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis) and state the finding supported by the result. -the finding should indicate HOW the two factors interact with each other. (1.5 point: .5 for whether null hypothesis is rejected, 1 for a meaningful conclusion) p
> .05, fail to reject the null hypothesis there is not a significant difference between education, marital status and salary.
3. Create a mean plot with Ed as the horizontal axis and basic marital status as the grouping factor (each basic marital status represented using a separate line) and paste it here. Explain what the graph tells us about the interaction. Then describe how the graph shows the (significant or non-significant) interaction. (2 total. No point earned if the graph is not pasted here.)
- Correct graph type (.5 point)
- Correct data (.5 point)
- Explanation of graph (1 point)
This graph shows the mean of the salary compared by education and grouped by marital status. It shows that there is not a significant difference between them.

Q2. Perform and Interpret a Two-Way ANOVA (17.5 points total, if SPSS
output file is missing for this analysis, 50% of the total number of earned points will be deducted)
Use the Q2 worksheet in the data file for the following questions. This worksheet contains data from a study comparing two different antidepressants. The worksheet “Codebook” contains descriptions and values of the variables. Note that the depression score change (“Dchange”) is treated as a scale variable in this analysis.
With this factorial ANOVA, we would like to know:
-Is drug type a significant factor in depression score change?
-Is the episode type a significant factor in depression score change?
-Is there a significant interaction between drug type and episode type in terms of depression score change? A. Import the Q2 data set into SPSS
and submit the data file with your assignment. Make sure the SPSS
data file meets the following criteria: - All variables are imported
- All variables are configured correctly in “Measure” under the “Variable View”
- The “Values” for the nominal variables should be specified
(1 point total: deduct .5 for each error up to 1 point total)
Run a 2x2 two-way ANOVA and then answer the questions in sections B, C, D, and E.
The main ANOVA output table must be pasted here to support all subsequent questions related
to statistical results in Q1. No credit is earned for those questions if the table is not pasted here.

2
. (1.5 points, deduct .5 for each error.)
F
(3, 54) = 3.716, p
= .017,
2
=0.171
2. Draw a conclusion from the hypothesis testing result and state the finding as supported by the result. (1 point. .5 regarding the null hypothesis, .5 regarding the conclusion/finding)
p
< .05 fail to reject the null hypothesis, drug type causes a significant difference C. The main effect of Drug type.
1. Report the test result on this main effect in APA format, including F, p, and partial
2
.
(1.5 points, deduct .5 for each error.)
F
(1, 54) = 4.687, p
= .035,
2
=0.080
2. Draw a conclusion from the hypothesis testing result (reject or fail to reject the null) and state the finding supported by the result. -Finding must indicate HOW the factor affects the DV if it is a significant effect.
(1 point, .5 for hypothesis test result, .5 for finding)

A survey found that Massachusetts residents spent an average of $861.75 on the lottery, more than three times the U.S. average. A researcher at a Boston think tank believes that Massachusetts residents spend less than this amount. He surveys 100 Massachusetts residents and asks them about their annual expenditures on the lottery. (You may find it useful to reference the t table.)
