Outline 1. Abstract 2. Response 1: Bianca DiMinico 3. Response 2: Gaibrielle Matthews Abstract To investigate how statistics are used in regular life, the essay has to begin with a statement that may be argued either for or against. People gather significant information that is expressed in numerical form daily and analyze it. The information is intimately connected to a variety of facets of their life. In light of this, it is common practice to utilize fundamental statistical methods when analyzing the information gained regarding day-to-day operations. Finding out what the findings are like on average concerning actual occurrences or phenomena might be helpful. To eliminate bias from stratified samples, Susan should ensure that they are not only looking at a specific group of people. The effective way to do this is by looking at a diverse group of people and including different perspectives in their work. . Hi Bianca It was interesting to read your post, especially on your real-life application of data in a personal or professional decision. As some may be unaware, you have demonstrated that statistics is crucial in our daily lives. I have also gone through the same process in buying my first car, which
was critical to come up with a final decision. I like your consideration and that you picked the best alternatives that you were contended with at the end of the day. I like your advice to Susan on how to select a sample that would not represent the population since both genders will not be represented with the idea of convenience sampling applied. I think a convenience sample is an easiest and fastest way to get her data. However, she should be aware of the limitations of convenience sampling. I agree she will have a high number represented if she picks both males and females. There are many types of biases that exist in this method, such as social desirability bias and selection bias which can be removed by using a different type of sampling method such as quota sampling or probability sampling. Thank you for sharing. Hi Gabrielle I like how you answered the questions and your encounter with using data to make decisions. I also like how you said the route was not as congested during peak hours, and it took you less time to get to your destination. You played with numbers and tested the route during peak and non-peak hours to decide. I agree with you that random sampling would not have been adequate in not collecting samples from the whole population. Random sampling may not be representative of the entire population, which means there will be some biases in the results. For example, if you randomly sample people in a city, you may find that most people are older than 18 years old because they are more likely to be home during the day. The problem with stratified sampling is that it can still have bias if not done correctly, which can lead to false conclusions about the population being studied. Which could happen if there are unbalanced proportions between strata, or if there are differences in response rates between strata, or if there are errors. I also agree that Stratified sampling would include the whole population at every grade level. Great post!
