Norms can be defined as acceptable behavior approved by society. Norms can be both informal and formal (laws). An informal social norm can be hugging a close friend of family member as a greeting while shaking hands with a coworker or acquaintance. Deviance is known as actions that go against social norms. Deviant behavior can be found in both minor and major situations. For example, standing too close to someone and not respecting personal space boundaries. A more major example of deviance can be as serious as driving under the influence. Values are how someone justifies what is good and bad. These views can be influenced by many factors such as religion, culture, etc. Some examples of values can be not stealing, being honest, being kind to all. Crime and social justice are related to these concepts because laws are normally based on social norms, values, and deviant behavior. If someone does something unjust or commits a crime they are usually defying a social norm or cultural value. This behavior is normally met with the justice system. My local court systems prefer to meet non-violent drug offenders with educational and substance abuse courses rather than jail time. They favor treatment over punishment. With that being said, it is an unfortunate pattern in our country that certain groups of people see higher incarceration rates and sentences over others. This is an issue that needs to be investigated and changed.
