Is this conclusion consistent with the evidence presented in this learning block? Answer Yes or No, and then explain your choice in one or two sentences. Yes The support of non-Native Alaskans was an important factor leading to the settlement of Alaska Native claims because this support was garnered through awareness of the mistakes of the past treatment of Native Americans. Had it not been for the support of non-Natives, the Alaska Natives could very well have lost all their lands and been forcefully removed as was done in the past. It was the cooperation between non-Natives (the government) and the Alaska Natives (ANF) that made the ANSCA possible. Module 8 Short Responses – Question 2 Consider the following statement: ANCSA was a fair settlement for Alaska Natives . Is this conclusion consistent with the evidence presented in this learning block? Answer Yes or No, and then explain your choice in one or two sentences. Yes ANSCA was a fair settlement for Alaska Natives because it was generally well-received by both Natives and non-Natives. The settlement helped to preserve the land for future generations and prevented the land from being taken away from them entirely. The settlement also helped the Natives build economic equity in the state through dividends paid from the new oil economy. Although the settlement was not without controversy and is still debated on both sides. Module 8 Short Responses – Question 3 Consider the following statement: ANCSA led to economic benefits for white Alaskans as well as for Natives . Is this conclusion consistent with the evidence presented in this learning block? Answer Yes or No, and then explain your choice in one or two sentences. Yes ANCSA led to economic benefits for white Alaskans as well as for Natives because ANSCA allowed the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline to be built which led to an oil economy for the state. This oil economy benefits every Alaskan citizen regardless of race or ethnicity and provides an
annual dividend representing a share of the oil-land royalties. Module 8 Short Responses – Question 4 For an American Literature course: What skills from this course would you use to develop a brief essay on the significance of Walt Whitman's "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd," a poem written in the summer of 1865? To write an essay on the significance of the poem I would first use the research skills that I have developed to understand the time that the poem was written (1865). I would then develop a thesis statement that communicates the significance of the poem relating to the time in the past as it pertains to the current time. Module 8 Short Responses – Question 5 For a Sociology course: What skills from this course would you use to produce an annotated bibliography for your course research project? To produce an annotated bibliography, I would use the citation skills that I have developed during this course, as well as the summarizing skills that I developed in my studies in this course. Through summarizing passages from articles and re-writing thesis statements I have learned how to summarize what I have learned into my own words which is what is required when producing an annotated bibliography. Module 8 Short Responses – Question 6 For a Business course: What skills from this course would you use to decide between two different investment proposals? For deciding between two different proposals, I would use the research skills that I learned when looking for primary and secondary sources. Deciding what sources to use required me to critically analyze each source as it pertained to my topic, which could be applied to decide between the business proposals. Module 8 Short Responses – Question 7 How can history serve as a lens for the rest of the academic program you'll pursue at SNHU? Has this course changed the way you think about what you want to study? Why or why not? Please respond to this question in two to three sentences, using proper grammar.
While this course has not changed what I want to study because I am pursuing a degree in communications, this course has changed the way I study. This course has helped me build on critical thinking skills through research, analyzing sources, and learning how to think like a historian by considering complexity, contingency, causality, context, and change. Module 8 Short Responses – Question 8 What did you learn about one of these topics or historical events that was new or surprising to you? Explain in at least two to three sentences; be sure to use proper grammar. While I learned something new for each of the topics or historical events, what I learned about Women's suffrage and the Nineteenth Amendment that surprised me was how long it took for women to earn the right to vote. The tenacity and strength that these women had to continue the fight until the right to vote was won are truly inspiring. We take so much of their hard work for granted as we enjoy the right to vote each year and I don't think many people take the time to appreciate it. I know I didn't prior to learning more about this topic in this course. Module 8 Short Responses – Question 9 In one paragraph, explain which parts of your historical investigation and analysis were most interesting to you. Which parts were less interesting? Be sure to use proper grammar. Everything about my historical investigation on the Equal Rights Amendment was interesting. What was most surprising is that approximately 72% of Americans incorrectly believe that the US Constitution guarantees men and women equal rights today (The Guardian, 2020). I learned of the ERA's failure to pass last year, so clearly things are not changing as much as we think. It was also surprising to me that The STOP ERA movement led by Phyllis Schlafly was the driving force behind the failure of the amendment, and it was women against women that caused the amendment to fail.
