1 Collaborating on a Family Genogram Brittany M. Hill Walden University COUN 6726: Couples and Family Counseling Dr. Margaret Zappitello April 30, 2023
2 Collaborating on a Family Genogram A genogram, which is a “graphic interactive assessment and treatment device used by counselors and clients” can be useful in exploring the background of a client (RiGazio-DeGilio & Kang, 2021, p. 23). The factors that can be outlined with a genogram can possibly contribute to the difficulties that would cause a client to seek counseling treatment (RiGazio-DeGilio & Kang, 2021). This paper will outline patterns that were found when completing a genogram with a volunteer. After outlining the patterns, I will explain how the genogram could be useful in counseling this volunteer. Finally, I will explain how this assignment might impact my work as a counselor. Family Genogram As I completed this genogram with my volunteer, one pattern stuck out to me. As shown in the appendix of this paper, my volunteer is distant from his biological father, resulting in my volunteer not knowing much about that portion of his family (see Appendix). When discussing this with my volunteer, he stated that he was not sure why he is distant from his biological father and that his father was just never apart of his life. My volunteer also stated that they were raised by their step-father and didn’t know that their step-father was not their biological father until they were in high school. Genograms in Couples and Family Counseling Since genograms can show patterns of behavior and how problems can evolve over time, it would be useful to utilize this genogram with the volunteer (RiGazio-DeGilio & Kang, 2021). With this volunteer specifically, the genogram can assist with exploring family dynamics and the counselor and client could work together to figure out a plan of action to break any negative patterns or work through negative dynamics within the family system (RiGazio-DeGilio & Kang, 2021). Since this genogram shows that my volunteer is distant from his biological father, narrative therapy could be useful in determining the outside influence that caused that distance (Logan, et al., 2021). If this volunteer was able to discuss
3 the reason for the distance between themselves and their biological father, they might be able to work through that negative dynamic to make changes. Narrative therapy could also be useful for this volunteer if they were able to engage in family counseling with their biological father. In family counseling, the father could be encouraged to discuss his outside influences that initiated the distance from his perspective (Logan, et al., 2021). Since narrative therapy separates the person from the problem by using the individual’s experiences and determining how they shape their relationships, it could be useful in getting to the bottom of the distance without placing blame on either person in the family system (Logan, et al., 2021). Understanding of Genogram After completing this genogram with my volunteer, I reflected on the difference between patterns from my personal genogram and my volunteer’s genogram. I realized during this reflection how the patterns from my genogram were so different from my volunteer’s; however, we are very similar with how we conduct ourselves now as adults. This realization will impact me as a counselor as I now have seen firsthand how things can be different for everyone, but they might not show these patterns in their day-to-day life. Conclusion After completing a family genogram with my volunteer, I realized that family systems can have a variety of patterns that will likely be different from my own. Completing a genogram with a client can assist them in seeing patterns that may exist within their family system that could cause other problems within their life. Overall, genograms are useful in creating a treatment plan for clients and can be extremely useful in couples and family counseling.
