1 Diversity Challenges and Reflections Brittany M. Hill Walden University COUN 6726: Couples and Family Counseling Dr. Margaret Zappitello March 19, 2023
2 Diversity Challenges and Reflections A time where my family was touched by diversity would be when I was in elementary school. During this time, my mother and father were going through a divorce, which left my mother and I homeless. We would stay at a friend’s house for a few nights at a time before going to another house for a few nights. My mother and I bounced around from house to house until I was a freshman in high school. The impact this had on my family was that it made my mother and I closer to each other. We fought through some tough times financially, but we made it through together. I feel like this made our relationship stronger. However, this situation also impacted me personally by showing me how important it is to budget wisely. If I did not go through this experience, I don’t feel like I would understand how important it is to work hard for what you have. While my mother and I came out of this situation strong, the remainder of our family pushed us to the side due to being “poor.” If I was a counselor and my client had brought up this issue, my response would vary depending on which family members are present in the session. If it was just mother and child, I would assist them in exploring their thoughts and feelings about the strength of their relationship and how they overcame the obstacles they went through. I would also explore how that time impacted each member of the family system and determine if there are any trauma related symptoms due to this event. I believe in order to fully address the issue, it would be important to explore feelings related to the divorce of the parents that ultimately led to the homelessness/poverty of the mother and child. If these feelings were explored in counseling, it could open up more feelings and thoughts related to the entire event and could assist with further healing. It would be important for the counselor to understand the point of view of all members of the family system. As a counselor, I will be sensitive to the impact diversity has on families and couples by not having any biases towards any diverse population/event. I will make sure that I keep an open mind about
3 what other people may view as a challenge relating to diversity. If I were to have a bias about challenging events’ impact on people, I will not be able to fully assist my clients working through the emotions that come along with those challenging events. It will be important to leave my bias about any diverse populations outside of the session to assist with the best processing and healing for my clients.
