A. Summarize the social context described in the scenario, including the following: • Maria’s family have been living in a large city but have recently moved to a rural town. • Maria’s community is predominately white and middle class. • Maria’s cultural background is biracial; her father is African American and her mother is Hispanic. B. Discuss how you, as a teacher, would try to help Maria in a culturally responsive, trauma-informed way by doing the following: 1. I would reach out to the principal to ask that they do some research on the social media group and find the students responsible. I would then work with the principal and the school councilor to find help for Maria’s mental health. a. If the principal and I could manage to get the social media group removed, that would be a short-term solution to stopping the bullying. Of course, just removing the social media group would only temporarily stop anything and would not guarantee that the students wouldn’t retaliate against Maria. For a more permanent solution to the bullying, we would speak to the students that are responsible and their parents about how their actions have affected Maria. To ensure that these students are no longer an issue to Maria or other students, we would keep a closer eye on students and how they treat students who are coming from different backgrounds than themselves. As for Maria, I believe that having access to a mental health counselor that she could talk to about the way the bullying has made her feel would help her with the current mental health crisis she is going through. 2. I believe Maria’s family would also benefit from mental health counseling and doing family counseling with Maria. The bullying has likely made Maria feel that she is isolated and that her family is too busy to help her, and family counseling will help bring the family unit back together. C. I am white, lower class, and non-religious. I come from an abusive family dynamic with a history of drug abuse. The rural community I grew up in was predominantly lower class, Native American, and Southern Baptists. I faced a lot of bullying in school because I am a member of the LGBT community living in a conservative environment. 1. Since I faced bullying in school, I feel that I would be more sympathetic towards Maria’s mental health state as a result of her bullying. I was very different than most of the people in my class and I really relate to Maria because of this.
