Yes, police department do tend to engage in selected law enforcement practices in urban communities due to the fact that urban communities tend to house more people. There is an estimated 3,573 people who live in urban area in 2010 . ( Bureau, 2021). As such police departments should be more involved with urban community citizens to show them that they are there it helps them. “Community policing also has opened the door to a more victim-oriented approach within law enforcement.” (Cengage, 229). When the residents of an urban community have a more open approach to the police, they can help assist in reducing crime rates in the urban community. When the residents of urban communities have strong relationships with the police officers, they can be provided with skills needed to recognize when a crime is occurring and how they can prevent themselves from becoming a victim. Victim will also feel more comfortable reporting crimes and maybe even helping catch the suspect. “Is it true that murders generally occur at a higher rate in urban neighborhoods than in suburban and rural areas?” (Cengage, 82). “According to the NCVS, violent crime in urban areas rose 29 percent from 2020 to 2021, from 19.0 to 24.5 victimizations per 1,000 persons aged 12 or older. From 2018 through 2020, the NCVS found that the violent-crime rate in urban areas was between 29 percent and 42 percent higher than the rate in rural areas.” As such law enforcement should do what they can to build a strong relationship with their community to help decrease the crime rates which would benefit everyone.
