The Social Workers Approach: Brandon’s Case Student Name Walden University SOCW 6200 Human Behavior and the Social Environment 1 Professor Name Date
BRANDON’S CASE Ecological model: Person-in-environment on micro, mezzo, and macro levels.  The social worker took a thorough approach to understanding Brandon's case by using the ecological person-in-environment model. This model helped the social worker to examine the various systems in Brandon's life that may be affecting his well-being and contributing to his trauma. The social worker used the systems theory to explore Brandon's environment. The ecological person-in-environment model is based on the idea that individuals are not separate from their environment but are influenced by multiple systems, including family, school, community, and culture. Examining these systems helps to understand the complex interactions between the individual and their environment. Systems theory helps us understand how a family system is intertwined with many other systems (Zastrow, C. H., Kirst-Ashman, K. K., & Hessenauer, S. L., 2019, p. 165). Using the systems theory, the social worker analyzed the relationships between Brandon and the different systems in his life. This approach helped to identify the factors that could be contributing to his trauma and provided a framework for developing an effective intervention plan. The social worker could better understand the various systems impacting Brandon's well-being by examining his family and school environment. This information was then used to develop a plan addressing Brandon's needs and environment. The social worker in Brandon's case utilized a comprehensive approach involving the systems theory intervention strategy on all three levels: micro-level, macro-level, and mezzo- level. Specifically, the social worker employed a micro-level intervention strategy by directly engaging with Brandon and his mother to conduct family and individual sessions. The main objective of this approach was to gain insight into Brandon's psychological needs, family
relationships, and peer relationships. Through this approach, the social worker aimed to facilitate the identification and processing of emotions and feelings of both Brandon and his mother, provide personalized support, and develop effective coping mechanisms that would benefit them both. Families can provide care and nurturance only to the extent that other macro systems in the environment, including communities and organizations, provide support and empower them (Zastrow, C. H., Kirst-Ashman, K. K., & Hessenauer, S. L., 2019, p. 164). The social worker employed a macro-level intervention that involved an in-depth exploration of the various relationships in Brandon's life. This approach allowed the social worker to examine how his interactions with his mom, her boyfriend, his dad, and his peers affected him. Additionally, the social worker investigated the factors that contributed to the current situation, considering Brandon's past experiences, social environment, and personal characteristics. Through this comprehensive analysis, the social worker was able to gain a more nuanced understanding of Brandon's circumstances and develop a more effective intervention strategy. The social worker implemented a mezzo-level intervention, which is a type of intervention that focuses on addressing issues within a specific community or group. In this case, the intervention aimed to bridge the gap between the micro and macro levels by coordinating care and ensuring it was ongoing. The social worker worked with Brandon to create a care plan that included a psychological evaluation and the prescription of antidepressants to help improve his well-being. Overall, the social worker's approach was holistic and practical, considering the many factors that can contribute to a person's well-being. By addressing the individual and societal

factors impacting Brandon, the social worker was able to provide him with the support he needed to improve his quality of life. Missed Strengths During Brandon's assessment, the social worker may have missed some of his strengths that could have benefited his treatment. For instance, Brandon was open and willing to talk about his past experiences, which could have provided valuable insight into his current situation. Additionally, he expressed a strong desire to obtain help and improve his circumstances, indicating his motivation to progress. Lastly, Brandon had the support and encouragement of his mother, which can be a significant factor in his success during treatment. These strengths could have been leveraged to create a more effective treatment plan for Brandon. Ethics and values  Ethical principles are based on social work's core values of service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence (NASW, 2023). In this case, the social worker applied several social work ethics and values. Firstly, they worked towards social justice, aiming to create a more just and equitable society for Brandon and his mother. Secondly, they treated them with respect and dignity, ensuring their human dignity was upheld. Thirdly, the social worker maintained a non-judgmental attitude and refrained from judging them for the abuse they had experienced. Lastly, the social worker worked collaboratively with Brandon and his mother to develop a plan specific to their needs and goals, ensuring their self-determination was maintained throughout the process.
Challenges Brandon was facing several challenges that were affecting his overall well-being. One of the main issues he was dealing with was defiant behaviors and verbal aggression, which was causing problems in his relationships with family and peers. In addition, he was experiencing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, fear, and excessive worrying, which were significantly impacting his ability to function correctly in his daily life. A combination of individual, relational, community, and societal factors contribute to the risk of becoming a perpetrator of Sexual violence (CDC, 2022). If the social worker had not identified and addressed Brandon's sexual abuse, Brandon's mental health could have been severely impacted, which could have resulted in Brandon becoming a sexual perpetrator, displaying hostility toward women, involved with drugs and alcohol, low self-esteem, violent or abusive intimate relationships, social isolation, feeling misunderstood and disconnected, leading to further social difficulties and a decline in his mental health.
