COUN 5093 Technology in Counseling Name: Ashley Combs Date: 5/29/23 ______________________________________________________________________________ THE STUDENT IS REQUIRED TO USE THIS TEMPLATE TO COMPLETE THIS ASSIGNMENT. Directions: The student will explore and discuss the role of technology in counseling through this directed reflection experience. The student will utilize a minimum of four sources; a minimum of one source utilized per subject area. One of the four required sources must be the ACA Codes of Ethics, the other sources could be scholarly journals, books, and/or appropriate websites. The student will respond to the pre-set prompts listed below utilizing proper spelling, grammar, intelligible sentences, and APA format (for the margins, double spaced line spacing, intext citations, and references). 1. Web Counseling or Telehealth A . The current issue is that web counseling is becoming more of a thing. It is not an issue so to speak. It does make it harder on the counselor to ensure complete privacy while being on a web counseling program. H.4.C (Technology-Assisted Services) & H.2.a (Informed Consent & Disclosure) are the codes that stands out to me because it discusses the barriers as well as the things that need to be done to ensure the confidentiality of the client (American Counseling Association, 2014). Informed consent really focuses on things you should address to the client before starting the session (ACA, 2014). It also brings to light emergency procedures that can be implemented (ACA, 2014). B. I think utilizing things such as web counseling is a great thing. However, just like everything else, there are barriers. I think the first con would have to be the fact you can’t always guarantee who is listening on either side of the call (ACA,2014). The pro would be the client and counselor could utilize this feature anywhere if they needed to. 2. Social Media (like Facebook, Twitter, etc.…) (both personal and professional use) A . The current issue would be the misuse of social media. Social Media can be utilized in a professional aspect if utilizing a professional account and posting only professional things without disclosing personal things or client matters. H.6.d (Use of Public Social Media) is an 1
ACA ethics code that really stood out to me because it talks about how counselors must take precautions to ensure they are not disclosing confidential information (ACA, 2014). H.6.a (Virtual Professional Presence) is another code that stood out. This code talks about if the counselor wants to utilize social media and how they should go about doing so (ACA, 2014). B. My personal view is that social media can cause issues and I think it would be better to be safe than sorry. I think if we are going to utilize social media, it should be from a professional perspective and not post anything personal. I personally don’t utilize social media so I will not ever be utilizing it. I think one pro would be it would inform clients of closings or information about the facility (Tillman et al.). A con would have to be the fact it would be easy to cross a boundary on social media (Tillman et al.). I have seen this firsthand in a professional setting. A therapist allowed a few clients on her personal Facebook and shortly after she was flooded with messages about the facility and therapy. So, from a professional and personal perspective I think I won’t be utilizing social media. 3. Technology Credential A. Whenever doing long distance counseling with means such as telehealth, therapists must take a training course to gain credentials for distance counseling (Kingston, 2022). The training is called distance counseling credentials (DCC) (Kingston, 2022). This training provides information needed for HIPAA compliance, how to present yourself on the camera, crisis planning, ethics, how to make the client comfortable as well as care coordination (Kingston, 2022). H.4.c (Technology-Assisted Services) is the ethics code that would relate to distance counseling (ACA,2014). B. The credential will allow the counselor to gain more knowledge on complying with HIPAA, how to make the client more comfortable in a telehealth setting, how you should present yourself 2
in front of the camera, crisis planning protocols, ethics and care coordination (Kingston, 2022). In order to get the credential, counselors must get at least 9 continuing education clock hours (Kingston, 2022). You also must pass the telehealth exam before receiving the special credential (Kingston, 2022). 4. Counseling Relationship Strategies A. Multicultural competent counselor means that you are self-aware and have knowledge and skills to work with people of different cultures. It means we should not be biased; we should have an understanding of the culture and respect their culture without trying to push our beliefs or feelings onto them. I will do this by gaining knowledge of other cultures and religions. I think it would be beneficial to do some continued education courses on different religions as well as different cultural backgrounds. B. One strategy would be to learn continuously (AIPC, 2009). We must commit to our own professional development, and we can do this by continuing our education and gaining more knowledge (AIPC, 2009). The world is ever changing which means we must ensure we are gaining more knowledge about things as they change. We can continue our education by participating in workshops, courses, going to mental health conferences, reading articles and many other things (AIPC, 2009). Another strategy would be to understand your clients (AIPC, 2009). Flexibility and responsiveness are 2 important skills whenever it comes to communicating with clients (AIPC, 2009). We must be able to adjust to the client’s needs without being biased or judging the client (AIPC, 2009). 3
