Journal of Gerontological Social Work, 63 (6–7), 542–552. https://doi.org/10.1080/01634372.2020.1769793 ABSTRACT The COVID-19 pandemic, which is especially dangerous to older people, has disrupted the lives of older people and their family caregivers. This commentary outlines the adaptive and emerging practices in formal supportive services for family caregivers, the changing types of support that family caregivers are providing to their older relatives, and the ways family caregivers are seeking informal caregiving support during the COVID-19 outbreak. 1. What is the research question? What methods did the researcher use? The researchers used a qualitative approach, drawing insights from professional and personal experiences, exploring the areas of social work and gerontology. They focused on their personal experiences in addition to academic knowledge. They conducted webinars to get input from over 670 caregivers to make it real. The authors also provided qualitative data from discussions in online elder caregiving support groups. A variety of perspectives and real-time interactions with caregivers were possible through webinars and online support groups. The article highlights caregivers' resilience through practical actions like arranging essential deliveries and expressing gratitude for long-term care workers. It also, demonstrates how caregiving evolved during the pandemic and highlights the essential function that formal and informal support networks had in helping people navigate these difficult situations. As the
researchers highlight these dynamics, it becomes more important to understand the complicated impacts that the ongoing global health crisis has on family caregivers. 4. What does this article add to the course material for the day? This article adds to Chapter 13 in the textbook by addressing the challenges and dynamic surrounding caregiving particularly in the context of elderly individuals facing health issues. The article's main focus is on how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected family caregivers, emphasized their use of support systems and adapting techniques. However, Chapter 13 explores the more general topic of informal support for senior citizens, including family caregivers and the challenges they face, such as stress and its health effects. Both the article and chapter 13 make clear the practical and emotional obstacles that caregivers must overcome in addition to the fact that their roles are changing. The chapter examines the pressures that providing care can have on people, highlighting how crucial it is to understand the positive aspects of providing quality care as well as any potential drawbacks, such as illness and stress.
