Crime Reporting By: Jessica Miller 03/16/24 1
When looking at crime on how to understand it as well as manage it, precise counts of its occurrence are needed. There is often times uniform statistics on offenses and offenders gathered from official criminal justice agency records, and also unofficial sources such as victimization or criminal involvement surveys. The UCR represents one of the largest datasets on crime in the U.S. according to Mallicoat, S.L. (2016). Official crime statistics may be issued annually or on a regular basis in a commonly conventional framework of data presentation and analysis. The database includes a number of demographic variables to evaluate these crime statistics, including age, gender, race, and region (Mallicoat, S.L., 2016). Official crime statistics can be compiled by a number of police courts and corrections at various levels of the government. These statistics on the violations of laws, codes, and standards of a range of administrative and regulatory control authorities are produced. These statistics are based on the records of the authorities that keep track of criminal activity and criminals. The UCR program organizes its collection of crime data into two categories: violent crime and property crime. In the category of violent crime data, data is collected on four crimes: rape, and sexual assault, murder and aggravated assault. The other category, which is property, includes data on burglary, motor vehicle theft, larceny/theft, and arson (Mallicoat, S.L., 2016). The main objective of crime statistics first appeared in the 1800s as an adjunct to the administration of justice, was to assess the amount of crime and to determine if it had increased or decreased in order to control policy and practice. They each have their own set of issues but the main issue was they both have an underestimation of actual crime. A crime rate compares the number of occurrences of a particular crime with the size of the 2
total population and makes it easy to understand trends in criminal activity and victimization over time (Mallicoat, S.L., 2016). Multiple indicators of crime are also more likely to best inform study, theory, policy, and practice. The decrease in crime in the U.S. can be attributed to numerous variables, the most popular theories are: Law enforcement techniques have improved and officers now have better access to information and data that can help them detect when as well as where crimes will occur. The shifts in demographics due to the average age of population in the U.S. has increased, studies have shown that older people commit fewer crimes. The number of people incarcerated has risen tremendously taking many violent criminals off the streets. Technology is a big one as it is widely used in surveillance systems. As well as personal safety like private security guards. By any means Americans are living in one of the least violent periods in history known to mankind. Technology has helped law enforcement and people feel safe as well as help officers. Security surveillance has been enhanced through methods such as the use of CCTV cameras and face recognition systems and mounted still camera. That alone has helped the public have a feeling of safety and security with their day-to-day lives. There has also been an improvement with criminal investigations where criminals can easily be identified, and tracked and even apprehended on time after the analysis of micro trace evidence that is secured at the scene of the crime. Victims of crimes can easily report criminal cases to the officers resulting to easy and faster timely response. You can easily contact your local police department, which has made individuals feel more secure. 3

Technology can be defined as the application of scientific knowledge and methods in solving problems within the society (Van Brakel & De Hert, 2011). References: Mallicoat, S. L. (2016).
