EMM 400 TOPIC 3 DQ 1 Hello, Class and Professor, Although it is difficult to measure, I feel that federal terrorism prevention information sharing has not effectively prevented young individuals from engaging in terrorist acts. When it comes to violence, I must say it is hard to predict behavior to where someone might resort to violence because people are unpredictable a lot of the time. We as a society overlook people's behaviors and don't understand or know how to deal with them. However, terrorism is not adequately addressed in schools or society, in my opinion. It is not widely publicized, nor is it taught in schools. However, it is spoken about lightly but never to the point where it's something you are knowledgeable about or truly understand the nature behind the way these organizations and their ideologies go hand in hand. This subject is still ongoing because each week, month, or year, something eventually will happen that is a catastrophic event that was recorded, reported, and documented by the media and historians to help present and future individuals understand what happened on that fateful day. This is dismissed as unresolvable because one can never truly pinpoint where, when, why, and how people do what they do. While many are aware of foreign terrorism and the impact of 9/11 on our country, internal terrorism remains unknown, primarily among young people. Domestic terrorism is a big worry in the US, with an increasing number of threats each year ( National Terrorism Advisory System: Homeland Security ). Education on identifying and reporting radicalism is a crucial preventative strategy. I want to speak and highlight the community's guilty-by-association mentality. For example, those who knew about an assault, but did not report it would face prosecution. Another strategy I'd implement is to urge the media to refrain from covering terrorist attack perpetrators. The level of media attention these preparators get, like describing their whole back story, may inspire others to aspire to reach similar fame by performing the same kind of act or more significant. However, this strategy has a limitation, which is essential to balance reporting on radicalism and preserving free speech. It's important to avoid labeling people as radical simply because they hold opposing views, as this can promote cultural and political divisions.
Overall, I believe the systems we as individuals follow fail or are ineffective at information sharing of federal terrorism prevention, which is supposed to deter young people from engaging in terrorist acts or reporting too. However, with a few simple tweaks to how media reports and the use of terms, I believe that maybe we could turn ineffective information sharing into effective information sharing of federal terrorism prevention that can lead to helping young people understand, prevent, report, and deter terrorism.
