Values are deeply ingrained principles that guide our behavior and decisions throughout life. They represent our sense of right and wrong and are shaped by our experiences, culture, and social interactions. While values are typically seen as positive forces that guide us towards ethical living and positive social contributions, they can, under certain circumstances, lead to negative behaviors as well. Some of my values that relate to the values described in Haidt's lecture are in group/ loyalty and fairness/ reciprocity . Values can lead to negative behaviors because while an individual may hold a multitude of positive values, the way an individual's values are prioritized in a specific situation can have profound implications. For example, if success is highly valued above all other actions by an individual, their actions can resort to unethical practices such as lying or cheating to achieve said goal. This misalignment between ethical conduct and the pursuit of success can result in harmful behavior to oneself or others. My values impact what it means to be an engaged citizen and a member of a good society because, as Oldenquist states, performing public service tasks helps bring individuals into contact with different social groups. My value of diversity and inclusion, practiced through other areas of volunteering, allows me to engage in society and learn to trust different demographics with first- hand experience, as Putnam also explains.
