Discuss how looking at the family as the week of interest for clinical work or research is different from focusing on the individual. What are the implications resulting from this shift in perspective. What would you need to learn in order to work effectively with families in an addictions setting? Synthesize your answer with findings from Miller and Carroll (2006) and other readings to inform your opinion. I think that looking at the family for clinical work or research is very different than looking only at the individual. I think it is very important when looking into treating someone with addiction to investigate family history and get to know what their home life situation is. It is always important to know if there is a history of addiction within the family. I believe the family history is what is needed to learn to work effectively with the families in an addiction setting. There is a section within the Miller and Carroll (2006) text that discusses family history. It is also discussed by McNeece and DiNitto. “The topic of physical, sexual, and psychological abuse may or may not be broached in the initial assessment interview, depending on professional judgment” is stated within this text and discusses topics that are related to this discussion (McNeece et al., 2012).
