University of South Florida Department of Criminology CCJ 3701/Spring 2024 /Dr. Cass Module 2 Assignment: Introduction to Reading Research Articles ASSIGNMENT Throughout your educational career, the term research paper has been used to mean reading other people’s writing and summarizing it. Researchers call that a literature review. In this class, the term research is used to refer to a specific series of steps that include the collection and reporting of data. We will be reading research studies most weeks. However, we will NOT be focusing on the results of the research, but rather on the sections titled introduction/literature review, methods, and findings. A PDF of the first research article can be found under Module 2 and is titled Drinking at college parties: Examining the influence of student-host and party-location by Cynthia Buettner, Atika Khurana, and Natasha Slesnick (2011) . You will notice that I have highlighted portions of the text in the PDF, and pop- up comments will appear when you hover over the highlighting. I know that taking research methods online can be challenging, and I hope these comments and tips help you understand what can be challenging material. Instead of reading the whole article at once, I recommend you read each question below and follow along in the article. 1. Did you read the text above? If not, it is worth your time as it contains information that will be helpful all semester . Now, read the title of the article and the keywords (listed under the heading ARTICLE 1 HOW THESE ASSIGNMENTS WORK. You are to type your answers in the text boxes below where you see the instruction Click here to enter text. and your answers will appear in red. This allows me to quickly locate your answer while maintaining the format of the assignment. DO NOT DELETE THE FORMATTING. You must save the file as a *.doc or *.docx file. TIPS ON MAXIMIZING YOUR GRADE: Every question in this assignment has its own specific answer. Certain questions do not require you to write in complete sentences. If you can answer the question using only two words, two words are all you need. However, be sure to answer the question specifically. Each question is aimed at helping you understand and distinguish the various parts of the research process (see Figure 2.1 in Chapter 2 of your textbook for a visual depiction of the process). If you find yourself repeating the same information/answer for multiple questions, you can be sure that one of those answers is incorrect. NOTE: These are not the types of assignments where students typically earn perfect scores as that would indicate a perfect understanding of the material.
INFO) and speculate what this study is about. I speculate that this article is about how certain characteristics of colleges parties such as place and student status ca n influence drinking behaviors. 2. Based on any relevant experiences you have had what do you think the pattern of results will be? If you have never attended or hosted parties where people were drinking alcohol just write NA for not applicable. NA 3 . Every journal article will have an abstract that provides a summary of the entire study. It will describe the purpose of the study, a brief explanation of how the study was carried out, and a discussion of the results. Read the abstract and identify at least one of the variables the researchers were trying to explain. This is called a dependent variable (DV). Hint: You should be able to answer this in three to four words. College stu dent drinking behaviors. Click here to enter text. 4 . Read the Introduction. Notice the style of writing. Notice how almost every sentence has a citation. The researchers make statements that can be supported by prior research. Research almost always builds on previous research. When starting any research project, the first step is to have an idea about what you want to investigate, and the second step is to read everything you can find on the topic. What do the authors say about how their research builds or expands on previous research? In order to expand on earlier research, the current study looks at background traits that can help distinguish party hosts and attendees, compares student drinking habits and associated consequences, and evaluates how the location of the party affects host and attendee drinking habits and associated consequences. 5. Read the section labeled 2. Methods . This is the section of a research article where the study design, sample, data collection method, and measurement of variables are described. Describe the process used to identify/select the sample of people to study. Be sure to describe all steps of the selection process. This study used a large midwestern institution as its sample. Communication via email was sent to a sample of enrolled students chosen at random. The prerequisites for these students were being eighteen years of age or older and having previously replied to an online survey about drinking habits and partying. 6. Did the researchers have a list of students from which to select this sample? Answer Yes or No. Yes 7. Where did the list of students come from? The university registered list. NOTE: Did you say no to Q.6 and then answer Q.7 in an inconsistent way? If so, rethink your answer to Q.7. 8. Describe the sample of people selected for the study. Be very specific . Make sure to include a number in your answer. Hint: You should be able to write the answer in about 6 words . Average age of 20 years, mostly male, and equal representation of grade levels and the sample included 3,796 students. 9. HOW was the data on student drinking habits collected from each of the students? Click here to enter text. 10. During what specific time period was the data collected? (WHEN). Your answer needs to describe more than just the years covered. From 2005 to 2007, the survey was carried out in eight waves, which matched up with two weekends in the fall and spring. 2
Note: It is always important to pay attention to the years the data was collected. If the time period was 50 years ago, it might bring into question the generalizability of the results. In other words, one might be concerned that the patterns of results found in 1970 would no longer be relevant to understanding those behaviors in 2021. 11. Read the section labeled 4. Discussion where the results of the study are discussed. Did the data collected indicate that there were differences between party hosts and attendees when it came to party-related drinking behaviors? Yes or No. Yes If so, describe the differences. Compared to partygoers, student hosts reported drinking more alcohol, although this was only the case when the party was hosted off campus. However, guests at on-campus parties reported drinking more than the hosts did. The quantity of instances of dangerous drinking and subsequent consequences that were noted at the parties varied between hosts and guests. 12. In section 4. Discussion , the researchers point out several ways that the study design or methodology impacted the findings/results of the research. These are referred to as limitations and researchers are expected to discuss them (rather than try to hide them or pretend they do not exist). The researchers identify two limitations of the way that the data was collected. They are: 1. Data was collected from a single source 2. Unable to control the typical drinking behaviors of students 13. Pick one of the two limitations mentioned and report WHY it is the RESEARCHERS say this limitation could have impacted the findings/results of the study. There was no way to compare the drinking habits of specific students when they were part host versus guest because the data was gathered from a single source (host or attendee). 14. The researchers suggested that future RESEARCH should focus on attempting to explain why people who throw parties on campus typically drink less than those who attend. Two last hints: First, pay attention to the text in purple as it contains hints! Second, did you repeat any information in your answers. The same information is never the correct answer for more than one question. You will need to figure out where it fits and where it is not responsive to the question. Summary: This assignment helped you become familiar with the different aspects of research methods and the way that research results are reported in scholarly journals. Concepts you should be beginning to understand Research Literature review Sampling A sample One method used to collect data from participants Limitations of research designs 3
