Running head: IMPACT OF GLOBALIZATION ON CULTURE 1 Impact of Globalization on Culture Student Name Course Institutional Affiliation
IMPACT OF GLOBALIZATION ON CULTURE 2 Impact of Globalization on Local Culture Globalization represents one of the most discussed topics based on its impact on different dimensions of life. To a larger extent, the issue has touched different areas with culture being one of the most influenced areas. This position has always been influenced by different initiatives such as the development of economic partnerships with the intention of facilitating movements and economic activities within regional borders and internationally. According to the Peterson Institute for International Economics, globalization refers to the growing interdependence of world cultures, economies, and populations as a result of cross-border trade in services as well as goods. The exchange can also involve people, technology, the flow of investment, and information (Nguyen, & Tran, 2018). Although globalization can be perceived as an exclusively economic phenomenon, human activities and interactions on all frontiers tend to inculcate an ideational shift both radically and swiftly. As a result, globalization triggers social, cultural, and to some extent political effects. Culture especially from a local perspective has been significantly influenced by globalization. The increased economic influence all over the world that has been barked by technological advancements, as well as supportive legislations, has expanded the concept of globalization from exclusive economic definitions to humanistic approaches. For instance, modern technology has not only made it easier for people to talk and transact easily but also travel quickly and often (Duffin, 2018). Even though it might be argued that human beings have always been mobile and also, have been interacting with other people, tribes, and nations, the presence and impact of technology has not only made the process easier but also impacted local cultures (Nguyen, & Tran, 2018). This type of impact has been felt across different cultures in terms of change in the flow of ideas, views, concepts, and ideologies.
IMPACT OF GLOBALIZATION ON CULTURE 3 Through education, change in societal backgrounds, media, and arts, individuals are continually introduced to new views. Traditionally, it was believed that individuals could only be influenced into changing or adopting foreign cultures by traveling or living abroad. Such events guaranteed them actual experiences of the things that they hear or even view on television. To a larger extent, traveling and living in foreign countries or places were similar to the experiences of a person who left the comfort of his or her place of birth and decided to investigate the world. According to a survey by Duffin (2020), 49% of the respondents had a negative view of global economic engagement as a result of globalization. Furthermore, the Statista Research Department indicated that social globalization had influenced the cultures of different countries with Monaco being the first with an index of 91.5 points whereas the United States was ranked the 21 st with an index value of 86.56 (Statista Research Department, 2020). The highlighted topic proves to be of great interest based on the fact that globalization has triggered an aura of change whereby individuals are gradually forgetting their local cultures and embracing a different culture. The presence of information as well as technological advances has contributed to this trend. Studying the impact of globalization on local culture can help in identifying sociological steps that could be utilized in ensuring that local cultures are preserved. Furthermore, it can help to define and understand the shift in terms of the previous association of globalization with economical phenomena to social, political, and cultural concepts.
