Each developmental stage in Erickson's theory looks at several factors having a different effect on cognitive, emotional and social characteristics. I believe that his theory that people need 'concrete affiliations and partnerships' still holds true in the sense that there are factors to consider in the period in which the development stage of the young adult is happening. What I mean is that in the era when the theory was posited, the social construct around relationships was that marriage is a requirement for meaningful relationships. As such when a young adult's social identity is being formed, they take on the characteristics of that social period and focus heavily on marriage and getting married. Their cognitive process also is developed on family ideals and how to function in the family unit. However, in the social period that we now exist in, this is not the main focus of society and marriage and relationships are now defined differently as a result. What this means is that relationships are formed in a different context, now with the advent of common law marriage, or just a cohabiting relationship, persons are no longer socialized to think that marriage is the ultimate goal. This therefore makes it a virtual certainty that they seek relationships based on that factor and what they perceive it to be (Breiner et al., 2015). Especially as they become more independent and begin to seek their own identity in a world that has moved away from the traditional aspects that existed.
