Computational linguistics is a recently developed sub-field of linguistics, which is the science of language. As the name would suggest, computational linguistics focuses on the computational aspect of language. This means that researchers in computational linguistics try to build mathematical models of language. From the field's beginning in 1950, computational linguistics has been tied to computers. Computational linguistics emerged out of a combination of computer science and classic linguistics. This makes it a fairly new discipline. In its earliest form, computational linguistics was entirely theoretical. Early computational linguists theorized that one day, computers may be able to analyze language. Today, that theory is reality. Modern computational linguists use computer science, artificial intelligence, and neuroscience to build models that make it easier for computers to process language. Among the most important are the developmental, structural, and production approaches. Sometimes, scholars combine elements from different approaches as they go about their work.

Developmental In the developmental approach to cognitive linguistics, researchers try to simulate the way that children learn language. They program their models to learn language by picking up on statistical patterns. In the developmental approach, researchers do not incorporate grammatical structures into their models. However, many developmental cognitive linguists do pay attention to new research in child development so that they can build models that mimic human learning as closely as possible.
