JOURNAL INSTRUCTIONS:
✎
Sample, Prompt #?:
This document has been provided to show you how journal submissions are to be formatted. Notice the heading at the top of the journal document with the week number and your name. In future weeks, you will simply copy and paste the prompts from that week’s lessons into a new Word document (.doc/.docx) that you create, making sure to place a similar heading at the top of your own document for the respective week.
Your answers to the prompts should be indented like this to distinguish them from the text you copied from the lesson pages. Be sure to give care and attention in your responses, as these replies will be evaluated for correctness, completeness, and effort.
Your journal submissions will be a primary method for us to assess your engagement with the course and whether you are taking the lesson activities seriously. Please be thorough, thoughtful, and accurate in your journal responses!

Authors and Redactors, Prompt #1:
Describe in your journal in 1–2 sentences what Nephi is doing (by way of redaction) in the first 9 chapters of 1 Nephi.
Considering that redaction producing a new text from previous sources, Nephi does this by incorporating multiple sources into his narrative as he draws from the plates of brass, the records of his father and other available sources. Nephi even acknowledges that he makes an abridgement of the record of his father and offers his own new perspective on previous available sources. ✎
Authors and Redactors, Prompt #2:
Pick one of the references in the list above and write 1-
2 sentences explaining in great detail Nephi's redaction process in that passage.
In 1 Nephi 2:1-3, Nephi’s redaction process involves his own perspective of Lehi’s account of his vision as he carefully selects and condenses the narrative to focus on what he thinks is the most important. Through Nephi’s redaction, there is an emphasized message surrounding Lehi’s vision, divine communication, and the necessity for his family to depart from Jerusalem. ✎

Mormon reveals his efforts as a redactor by abridging the larger plates of Nephi, selecting
and compiling what he believed to be the most relevant and spiritually significant.
Mormon creates a new work that emphasizes key events, teachings, and prophecies from his abridgement.
✎
Authors and Redactors, Prompt #4:
Considering Mormon is skipping so much other material, why do you think he chose to spend so much effort explaining the Nephite system of weights and measures? How does his explanation help you make more sense of what he describes in verse 20–23? Your response should be in 1–2 sentences.
Mormon spends so much explaining this system to provide context of the economic and cultural aspects of the Nephite society. This context allows readers to make more sense of
verses 20-23 where he describes the monetary transactions and legal disputes involving currency in the Nephite system. ✎

is trying to accomplish by interrupting his telling of the Jaredite story.

Authors and Redactors, Prompt #7:
Identify one principle from this lesson that was most important to you. How could you implement this principle in your life?
One principle that I thought was most important to me was that Nephi, Mormon, and other influential people in the Book of Mormon have redactions in order to emphasize what they thought would be most important for us readers in these Latter-days. This makes me want to truly take into heart their messages because of how they can apply to my life. ✎
Translation, Prompt #1:
Watch the following video. Then, write1-2 sentences describing how Joseph Smith began the process of translating the Book of Mormon.
Joseph smith began the process of translating the Book of Mormon by constructing an alphabet based on the characters that he familiarized himself with. He also sought aid from other knowledgeable translators to see if they were familiar with the language.
✎
Translation, Prompt #2:
In one sentence, explain your understanding of how Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon.
Through Joseph Smith’s faith and worthiness, he was given the gift of translation and guidance from the power of God in order to translate the Book of Mormon.
✎
Translation, Prompt #3:
Write 1-2 sentences describing your thoughts on the ideas of “tight”
vs. “loose” control. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?
Tight control may be advantageous in that the audience may know that what is being translated is exactly what the original author intended to write or say and it may be advantageous to have loose control in that we can open the text to interpretation for our understanding. The disadvantage of tight control is that it may be difficult to understand since there may be other ways to write or say something and the disadvantage of loose control is that Joseph Smith’s own bias of opinion could have caused some hindrance. ✎
Translation, Prompt #4:
Write 2-3 sentences explaining the transmission process the Book of Mormon went through up until 1920. Make sure that you include discussion of the 1830, 1837, and 1840 editions of the Book of Mormon, as well as the role of Orson Pratt and the 1920 scripture committee.
The first edition was published in 1830 by Joseph Smith, and the 1837 and 1840 editions saw revisions and clarifications by Joseph Smith, Oliver Cowdery, and others. Orson Pratt played a significant role in later editions, introducing chapter breaks and footnotes for improve readability. The scripture committee in 1920 finalized the revisions of the Book of Mormon. ✎
Translation, Prompt #5:
Identify one principle from this lesson that was most important to you. How could you implement this principle in your life?
One principle that I learned from this lesson is just learning about the importance of faith and dedication. Joseph Smith was chosen and was given a huge role in the translation of the Book of Mormon and the restoration of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I know that God has a plan for me and that there is a work that He wants me to do,
I just need to open my heart and mind to listen to His promptings.
