Journal Submission (Week 3) – Matthew Barroca
✎
Plan, Prompt #1:
Write all of the principles you can find that describe why we need to live in
mortality.
Mortality is necessary to fulfill the purposes of God and for the plan of redemption to work. Mortality provides us with the opportunity of repentance and to reconcile with God. Mortality allows us to be accountable for our actions and to practice our agency in choosing between good and evil. Mortality brings about temporal and spiritual death as a consequence of sin. Mortality is a prerequisite for resurrection, which is needed for the restoration of the body and its reunion with the spirit. ✎
Plan, Prompt #2:
Explain in a couple of sentences what you learn about Judgment from these
verses: Mosiah 2:38–39, Mosiah 3:24–27, Alma 12:12–18, Mormon 9:1–6
Judgement is an inevitable reality where individuals will be held accountable for their actions during their time in mortality. For those who sincerely repent, mercy is extended towards them. Justice is served according to the knowledge and opportunities individuals had to do good or evil. ✎
Plan, Prompt #3:
What difference does it make to you to know these doctrines from the Book
of Mormon? (1–2 sentences)
Understanding these doctrines from the Book of Mormon helps me recognize the significance of personal character development and the eternal implications of my choices, guiding me to align my life with celestial behaviors. ✎
Plan, Prompt #4:
How will this “big-picture” understanding affect the way you study the other doctrines in the book? (1–2 sentences)
This “big-picture” understanding encourages me to approach the study of other doctrines in the Book of Mormon with a focus on their broader implications for personal growth and spiritual progression/
✎
Plan, Prompt #5:
What effect will this have on the way you live your life? (1–2 sentences)
Knowing these doctrines motivates me to continually elevate my actions and desires, striving to align them with the teachings of the Book of Mormon and the gospel of Jesus Christ, ultimately shaping my daily decisions and character development towards becoming more like the Savior. ✎
Plan, Prompt #6:
Identify one principle from this lesson that was most important to you. How could you implement this principle in your life?
One principle that stands out to me is the importance of personal character development and the and the idea that the plan of salvation is not just about where we go after death, but who we become while we spend our mortal life on Earth. To me, this makes the little things in life matter even more. From my thoughts to my actions, I can either choose my agency to create forwards spiritual momentum or I can choose to be complacent and forego my progression towards God. ✎
Fall, Prompt #1:
Why do you think that we must first understand the creation before we can fully understand the fall of Adam? Your response should be in 1–2 sentences.
Understanding the creation provides context for Adam’s original state and the subsequent
events leading to his fall, aiding in comprehending the significance and implications of his disobedience within the broader narrative of human existence. ✎
Fall, Prompt #2:
Carefully study the first three verses of 2 Nephi 2, and record in your journal in 1-2 sentences the different ways Lehi describes how both he and Jacob experienced the effects of the Fall of Adam and Eve. Also, look for the relationships between their afflictions and sorrows and their need for the Atonement of Jesus Christ.
Lehi describes how he and Jacob both experienced afflictions and sorrows as a result of the Fall, emphasizing the consequences of mortality, including physical weakness and spiritual separation from God. Lehi links these afflictions to their need for the Atonement
of Jesus Christ, suggesting that through Christ’s sacrifice, they can find redemption from both physical and spiritual consequences of the Fall. ✎
Fall, Prompt #3:
What was Lehi teaching Jacob when he stated that God would “consecrate thine afflictions for thy gain” (2 Nephi 2:2)? What is the meaning of the word
consecrate
?
How does the idea of afflictions being consecrated for your gain relate to the exercise of moral agency
and the doctrine of the Fall? Your response to these questions should be in 3–4 sentences.
When Lehi spoke of God consecrating Jacob’s afflictions for his gain, he was teaching him about the concept of divine intervention in human suffering, whereby God can sanctify or set apart the afflictions for a higher purpose or benefit. To consecrate means to
dedicate something for sacred use or purpose. In context of the Fall, God can help refine and strengthen individuals amidst their afflictions to aid in their spiritual growth and development. The doctrine of the Fall underscore the reality of afflictions in mortal life, while the exercise of moral agency allows individuals to choose how they respond to these afflictions, with the potential to be consecrate for spiritual growth. ✎
Fall, Prompt #4:
According to 2 Nephi 2:3, what role does our personal “righteousness” play in our “afflictions” being consecrated for our gain as described in
2 Nephi 2:3? What role does
“the righteousness of the Redeemer” have in both our temporal and eternal redemption? Your response to these questions should be in1–2 sentences.
Our personal righteousness is crucial in our afflictions being consecrated for our gain as it
influences our ability to accept God’s will and purpose in our trials. Through the righteousness of the redeemer, we are provided the means by which we can overcome our
afflictions and reach salvation. ✎
Fall, Prompt #5:
Acknowledging the reality that each of us is in a fallen condition, what are the means by which God allows us to be, “instructed sufficiently that [we] know good from evil”
(2 Nephi 2:5)? (1–2 sentences)
God’s commandments, the guidance of the Holy Ghost, the teachings of the prophets and scriptures allows us to be instructed sufficiently in knowing good from evil through various means. Our personal experiences and the consequences of our use of agency also allow us to be instructed. ✎
Fall, Prompt #6:
Your response to the following questions should be about 2–3 sentences. If all will be redeemed from the two deaths brought on by the Fall, why do we need to repent and obey the gospel? How does Jesus Christ help us overcome our own carnal nature in addition to the two deaths we inherited from Adam and Eve?
Repentance and obedience to the gospel is necessary to align ourselves with God’s will and experience the full blessings of His grace. Jesus Christ helps us overcome our own carnal mature and the effects of the Fall by providing the example, teachings, and enabling power of His Atonement, allowing us to overcome sin and become more like Him. ✎
Fall, Prompt #7:
In what ways were the “forbidden fruit” and the fruit from the “tree of life” in “opposition” (2 Nephi 2:15) to one another? (1–2 sentences)
The forbidden fruit led to spiritual and physical death, symbolizing disobedience and separation from God, while the fruit from the tree of life represented obedience and eternal life, highlighting the opposing consequences of choices made by Adam and Eve. ✎

I am grateful to be blessed with the opportunity to repent and free myself from the mistakes and sins I have made only because of Jesus Christ and his atoning sacrifice that He performed for me to be able to progress. Through Jesus Christ, I have found hope and healing because I have to come to know that His grace is sufficient. ✎
Fall, Prompt #11:
Identify one principle from this lesson that was most important to you. How could you implement this principle in your life?
What stood out to me the most was the importance of our agency in the plan of salvation and its role in aiding our return to dwell with Heavenly Father in His presence. There is a greater context to our free will and it is because of the Fall of Adam and Eve, Jesus Christ’s Atonement, and Heavenly Father’s plan of salvation, that allows us to choose between good and evil and to act in our free will.
