Please use this template for Week 02 Assignment: Prayer and Revelation A. Write a 100–200 word summary of what you learned from the preparation videos. From the preparation videos, I learned the importance of being purposeful as you study your scriptures. In the videos, there were many examples given of ways to do this but the one that stuck out to me the most was in the video, “ Visualization” where they listed three easy steps to help you visualize a scripture. The three things are “Setting, details, ask questions”. By using these three tools when reading any scripture(s) we can grow a deeper connection with the scripture and better understand it as well. Another thing that I learned from the preparation videos that we watched was the importance of re-reading scriptures even though we may feel like we understand them. While we may feel like we learned all we can from the section we are reading, these scriptures that we have read could mean something different to you now that you are in a different stage of your life and looking for different information/promptings. B. Complete the Scriptures table with your insights on effective prayer. Nephi 16:21–23 While we can pray to the Lord for help, we need to do our part to be prepared to follow His instruction. 1 Nephi 16:28 For your prayers to work, you need to have faith, diligence, and you need to give heed. 1 Nephi 17:7 Following the Lord’s instruction is a way to make sure that you will keep receiving revelation from Him. 1 Nephi 18:1–3 Through following the Lords council, even though we may not understand completely, He will guide us to the best possible outcome. 2 Nephi 32:1–9 To know the truth for ourselves, we need to utilize the gift of prayer and gain our knowledge from the Holy Ghost. Enos 1:1–17 Through asking forgiveness in prayer, as long as we are faithful and repentant, the Lord will forgive us. Alma 33:1– 11 We can use the power of prayer no matter where we are or what we are doing. Alma 34:26– 27 We need to always keep a prayer in our heart. 3 Nephi 13:7 When praying, we need to make sure that we are speaking to the Lord, not just going through the motions of praying and repeating the same thing each time. 3 Nephi 18:20 If we have faith and ask in the Father’s name, it shall be given us. 3 Nephi 19:24 We need to have a desire to pray to our Heavenly Father. 3 Nephi Have faith and anything you ask in faith will be done in the name of God.
27:29 Ether 2:14– 25 Through following through on the instruction we receive from the Lord, He will bless us with more revelation. C. Complete the Prayer table on the differences between the Zoramite prayer and Alma's prayer. Zoramite's Prayer Alma's Prayer The Zoramites prayed for themselves and for their own personal gain Alma prayed for others and their souls The Zoramites prayed for others to see them worshipping and know that that had “faith” Alma prayed because he had faith What feelings or insights do you have as you see the foil of the prayer by the Zoramites compared to the prayer of Alma? While comparing the foil of the Zoramites prayers to the prayer of Alma, one thing really stuck out to me. In the prayer that was recited by all of the Zoramites, they never once prayed for anyone expect themselves, especially for those with different beliefs than them. They talked very negatively about those who didn’t believe what they did, however Alma prayed not only for those who were different than him, he prayed for their souls and that they might be led to redemption through Christ. Alma prayed to help save the souls of those around him and the Zoramites prayed to keep those who weren’t like them out of Heaven. It shows a lot about the different faiths between the Zoramites and Alma, Alma being so full of love for everyone no matter their beliefs or the mistakes they have made, and the Zoramites being full of only love for themselves and those of their faith. D. Include both of your responses to two different slides from the Prayer and Revelation PowerPoint. 1. Choose one slide with a question(s) and respond to it with at least three sentences. 2. Share your thoughts about your favorite slide with a quote. Please write at least three sentences Learning and Teaching by the Spirit: 1. How do you recognize promptings of the Spirit? a. I recognize promptings of the Spirit because of the peace and calmness that I feel whenever I am prompted. I am a very energetic and busy person and so when I feel that calm feeling and I feel at peace, I know that is the Holy Spirit. 2. How do you invite promptings of the Spirit? a. I invite the promptings of the Spirit by making sure that I am in an environment where the Spirit would feel comfortable being as well. 3. What skills or practices should you develop to increase your ability to hear the still small voice? a. I need to start learning how to calm myself so that I will be able to hear the Holy Ghost easier without so much of a prompting as he is giving me now. I
like to keep myself busy and make sure that I am being productive and by doing that my brain is always running 1,000 miles a minuet. I need to slow down and make sure that I am always available to be an instrument in the Lords hands. My favorite quote from this week’s slides was in President Nelson’s talk from April 2018 where he said, “Elder Neal A. Maxwell taught, “To those who have eyes to see and ears to hear, it is clear that the Father and the Son are giving away the secrets of the universe!”” I had never thought about the inspiration that we receive as “secrets to the universe”, however it is so true! The universe is a vast and mysterious place but through studying the scriptures and other resources that we have been given to study to better understand our God, we can learn so much about not only the gospel but the world and universe as a whole and our place in that universe. One of the “secrets of the universe” that I have learned from Jesus’ example and that I have found to have worked in my life personally is to “Love one another”. Loving someone and being there for them can mean so much to all of the people involved but it also supplies an example for the person you are loving as well, while they may think that they are following your example, they are following Jesus’ example and growing close to Him.
