LIBERTY UNIVERSITY RAWLINGS SCHOOL OF DIVINTY Submitted to Professor Eric Spano in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the completion of NBST 515-B03 New Testament Orientation by June 20, 2021
In my video report assignment, I described Jesus as the Son of God who left His home in Heaven to carry the burdens of the world by giving His body as a living sacrifice. I stated that Jesus was able to heal the blind, cleanse the leper, raise the dead and many more miracles. I also told the audience that Jesus is also known as Emmanuel, Messiah, Lamb of God, Redeemer, and Savior. I ended my video report by saying “one thing we know for sure is one encounter with Jesus and you will never be the same”. Through the serious study of the Gospels my understanding of Jesus has grown, although I still see Him for all that was said in my video report, I have a greater perspective on who Jesus is based on the Gospels. Elwell states “The message that Jesus is the Lord who died and rose again for our salvation is the heart of the gospel but not the whole of it. An analysis of the preached message, the kerygma, as New Testament theologians call it, reveals that certain other facts and doctrines are also included” 1 . Having said that, we see Matthew starts off by giving us the story of the birth and preparation of Jesus which included the years of escape from Egypt to Nazareth to give birth to Jesus. As I reflect on this preparation of Jesus’ birth, I am able to notice that from the very beginning he defied all odds and logic. The book of Matthew continues to share his baptism, the start of Jesus’ public ministry and his authority. I believe one way in which my understanding of Jesus has grown is that through the gospel of Matthew I was able to see Jesus as teacher, his words were true, filled with authority yet compassionate and unbiased. In Matthew 8-9 I was able to see Jesus as healer which I had described in my video report. In Mark, I was able to see Jesus as a man of action. In further reflection, I understood Jesus to be a servant and Savior. Jesus states in Mark 10:45 “For even the Son of Man did not 1 Walter A. Elwell. come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” 2 . This allowed me to see the heart of Jesus and its pureness, willing to pay the price of sin on our behalf. In John, I was able to understand the overall theme of the Holy Spirit. Jesus taught his disciples that after he ascends to heaven, he will send the Holy Spirit who is able to guide, comfort and counsel those who follow Him. My understanding of Jesus through this is that He is a provider, and we can always count on Him to provide in all aspects of life. In all, I believe the serious study of the gospels has helped me to see Jesus through many different lenses. Bibliography Elwell, Walter A.
