Research Question:
What is the significance of marriage based on the biblical perspectives of
Paul and Jesus?
Thesis:
While marriage is recognized as an institution ordained by God symbolic of a covenant
relationship with Christ, it has been a topic of debate and controversy because of
misunderstandings of the intent, reason, significance, and interpretation from a biblical
perspective particularly that of the apostle Paul and Christ
Outline
I.
Argument that marriage is recognized as an institution ordained by God rather than a
causal relationship or commitment.
A.
Scholarly and biblical evidence maintain that marriage is an institution a covenant
relationship between “one man and one woman.”
1.
A cultural construct of marriage contrasts with the biblical ideals of
marriage.
2.
As Christians we recognize the inerrancy of scripture as it relates to
marriage as a divine institute ordained by God.
B.
The Apostle Paul’s perspective on marriage as expressed in (Ephesians 5:25-33)
1.
According to Paul, marriage symbolizes a covenant relationship with
Christ.
2.
Paul indicates marriage as related to Christ’s love for the church and
instructs husbands that their love for their wives should resemble Christ's
love.
II.
Argument if same-sex marriage is acceptable from a biblical perspective or if should
legislation be the deciding factor.
A.
The biblical perspective and Christian belief are for honoring God’s design of
marriage as between “one man and one woman.”
1.
Legislation that recognizes same-sex marriage outside of God’s intent for
marriage has been adopted and has been a critical topic of discussion.
2.
The institution of marriage that was established by God at creation
remains at the forefront of legal battles and political decisions.
B.
The church should respond to all people, not their sins, with Christ's non-
judgmental love despite their beliefs.
1.
As Christians wisdom should be sought to be able to respond to what
today’s society and legislation deem to be normal as it relates to marriage.
2.
The blueprint for marriage, the doctrinal position, and biblical goals for
marriage have been established by God by his design.
