Session 4 OT Theme Vlog.Script Miracle Cox Colorado Christian University BIB-101A-25008-SU23 - Old Testament Introduction David Yocum 07/14/2023
I. Introduction The two most interesting themes in the Old Testament are Creation and Greatness of YHWH (GOD). These two themes stand out the most throughout the old testament. Explaining how god created everything and also the greatness and mercy he showed throughout the old teastment (Part ll) What are the themes? I. Creation a. God is the creator of all things. b. God created humans to care for all his creations. He made humans in his own image, man and woman. c. For six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth and the sea and everything in them, and on the seventh day the lord rested. d. God gave mankind all the land, animals, and food that he had created, and told mankind to have children and multiply. e. Adam and Eve downfall started evil on earth. f. Sin has engulfed the whole world, returning it to its pre-creation chaos. God responds by sending a flood, clearing the way for a restored creation beginning with Noah and his family. g. God floods the earth to recreate mankind he can be proud of and makes a covenant with Noah.
h. Creation of covenant with Abraham. God went to Abraham and promises land, offspring, and blessing (Wright,2019) i. God instructed Israel to obey all the laws given on Mount Sinai, promising that obedience to His commandments would bring blessings and disregard would bring curses. j. Without God's creation Israel would not have been able to become a great nation and the promised land to Abraham. Jesus wouldn’t have risen from King David. God's word wouldn’t been spread through the prophets. II. Greatness of YHWH(GOD) a. God begins to recreate everything he destroys He gives the people the tabernacle and the arc (BIB-101A Session 4 Major Themes in Biblical Theology, n.d.) b. God forgives mankind for our sins no matter what. c. God has undying love for his people. d. God always shows his truth. e. God comes to Moses; God tells Moses to go and release the Hebrews from their slavery. The pharaohs refuse Moses, so God set plaques on Egypt. f. Moses does fulfill gods order and brings the Israelites out of Egypt. God let Moses know that he is to tell the Israelites that it was God that rescued them.

g. Joshua leads Israelites to the promised land. Israel being the promised land that God promised to Abraham. h. Throughout Israel many kings came with King David God brings triumph kingdom i. God makes a covenant with King David that one of his sons will reign forever and that God will be his father and he will be his son (Wright, 2019). j. God unconditional love, and mercy in all his creations is seen throughout the Old Testament Following into the New Testament and is still felt today within his children. Transition: Creation and greatness of YHWH are discovered throughout the Old Testament III. Where are they found? I. Creation A. Genesis 1:1-2 "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters" (New International Version, [NIV]) Genesis 1:26-27 "Then God said, 'Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.' So, God created mankind in his image, in the image of God he created then; male and female he created them" New International Version (NIV)
B. Genesis 7:24 "The waters flooded the earth for a hundred and fifty days" New International Version (NIV). C. Genesis 9:1-2 "Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, 'Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth" New International Version (NIV) D. Genesis 12:1-3 “The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you” New International Version (NIV) E. Deuteronomy 28:9 “The Lord will establish you as his holy people, as he promised you on oath, if you keep the commands of the Lord your God and walk in obedience to him. 10 Then all the people on earth will see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they will fear you. 11 The Lord will grant you abundant prosperity—in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your ground —in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you” New International Version (NIV). V. Greatness of YHWH
A. 1 Samuel 12:22 “For the sake of his great name the Lord will not reject his people, because the Lord was pleased to make you his own” (NIV) B. 1 Chronicles 16:25 “For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods” New International Version (NIV). C. 1 JOHN 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” New International Version (NIV). D. God promises a king that will rule over all the kingdoms to David. After David fails God and dies, he has not sons ruling. So, God rises us a king from David like he promises and that is King Jesus, God's son (Wright,2019) E. God saved Noah and gave him and his family safety during the flood along with the animals. God was ashamed of mankind and wanted to create a new one. He flooded the earth for 150 days and when the waters receded, he told Noah to multiply and fill the earth. That was the new creation of mankind (Wright,2019) F. Exodus 3-7-10 “The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. 8 So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey—the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. 9 And now the cry of the Israelites

has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. 10 So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.” New International Version (NIV) VI. How are they important in their own way? A. Creation is important in its own way because without Gods creation we as mankind would not be here. The creation of Gods faith, love and peace would not exist on earth without god. God’s love will forever be unconditional to his children. B. The Greatness Of YHWH(GOD) is important in its own way because YHWH is the purpose and reference point of all creation. Without God there is no beginning or no end. God's Word teaches us that God is the reason of life. God's greatness is incomprehensible and immeasurable, and God’s word only gives us a glimpse of how powerful God is throughout creation. God is the source of all goodness, and God's character determines the goodness of his world. God's greatness shows mankind what we need to do in order to live the righteous path, and that's what makes it so meaningful. When you meditate on God's good intentions, you stop looking and focusing on the evil things in the world. YHWH's greatness helps us overcome the challenges of the world and not be discouraged by the wickedness that abounds in the world. Transition: Based on what you’ve learned so far in the course, how do the themes you chose fit into the greater OT storyline? (Part lll)
(Part lll) I. The two themes mentioned in part II that I thought would fit into the greater OT storyline was Creation and The Greatness of YHWH. Creation fits into the greater Old Testament storyline in many unique ways. Because of the importance of Gods creations, Without Gods creations the Old Testament would not be what we are talking about today, there would be no mankind or anything of a living aspect without God creating. Also, Gods promises that he fulfilled to his obedient ones plays a big factor in the greater OT storyline with the theme Creation . THE Greatness of YHWH's fits into the greater Old Testament storyline by showing that God has absolute control and power over all created things. God show his greatness Throughout the Old Testament, God continues to prove his greatness to his people till this day. God uses his power to protect his people from utter destruction and to preserve a good priesthood, God greatness is remarkable. God will always be there for us and show us his power the way his children need it. Without God we would have nothing . REFERENCES
