EDUC662 – Week 3 discussion Main Thread – Spiritual development
Belief, according to Fowler (Patton, et al., 2016), is the "conscious intellectual agreement with particular
doctrines or ideologies," (p. 196), while religion is the cumulative set of beliefs and rituals of a
community over time. Faith is the bedrock of both belief and religion, representing the search for
meaning in life. Spirituality was characterized by Astin, Astin, and Lindholm as a "sense of identity and
purpose."
The spiritual and religious model developed by Astin, Astin, and Lindholm (Patton et al., 2016) was the
most useful to me since it was both broad and relevant to Christianity. The questions raised by the
Spiritual Quest may be found in God's Word. I was created in God's likeness (Genesis 1:26-27) and am his
beloved child (Rom. 8:15; EST 2001). Concerning composure, the Bible tells me to be glad in my trials
since "suffering produces perseverance, perseverance, character, and character, hope" (Romans 5:3, 4
ESV). James 1:26-27 teaches me to care for widows and orphans, therefore the Bible also addresses the
ethics of caring and charity participation. The Bible encourages unity among Christians by teaching that
all believers make up one body in Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12–28, English Standard Version, 2001).
Scripture addresses the different forms of identities investigated so far. As a bond between two people,
God created marriage between a man and a woman. Covenant marriage (Genesis 2:24–25; Hebrews
13:4) is the only setting for sexual activity. Revelation 5:9-10 (ESV 2001) describes a heavenly worship
service in which members of every race and people group give praise to Christ. Religion is another
identity that often undergoes significant growth and investigation throughout the teen and college years,
alongside ethnic, gender, and sexual identities. Like sexual identity development, religion and spirituality
have an individual and group component (Patton, et al., 2016).
Scripture supports Park's (Patton, et al., 2016) emphasis on community with the command to not
forsake gathering together for edification and good works in Hebrews 10:24-25 (English Standard
Version, 2001), as well as her emphasis on affect and imagination in faith with the command to think
about what is good (English Standard Version, 2001, Phil 4:8). God admonishes parents to teach their
children God's Word (Deut. 6:7; cf. English Standard Version 2001, Deut. 6:5), which is consistent with
Fowler's finding that parents mold their early children's religion (Patton, et al., 2016).
