Passage: Acts 9:36-43
A.
What points of application can be made using the “Four Questions for Application?”
State and explain 1 point of application for each of these four questions. Your explanation
for each of these points should be 1 paragraph (150-300 words) in length.
1.
The question of duty
In Acts 9:36-43 Peter showed his obedience and duty to God by using prayer to
bring Tabitha back to life. Peter first started his journey of healing at the beginning of
Acts. This is also seen when he heals Aeneas in Lydda. It is Peter’s duty to be a “healer”
through God. Not only is he a healer, but he is also using his power in prayer to get others
to believe. This also adds to his call to duty by helping others restore their relationship
with God. Acts falls into the story of redemption, and it is visible through the actions of
Peter that God is using him to get the people in Lydda and Joppa to believe in God. And
this further redeems our relationship we have with God. It is also the power of Peter’s
belief in God that has allowed him to have this power in prayer, and to use this power.
Peter saw it as his duty to save Tabitha as he immediately went from Lydda to Joppa to
heal her as he had done before.
2.
The question of character
“The question of character is about what God is doing in me through the Holy
Spirit” (Cartwright and Hulshof, p. 178, 2019). This also is shown by Pete actually
traveling and healing Aeneas and Tabitha. It is literally God working through Peter to
heal them. And once the people of Joppa heard about the miracle of Tabitha, thy too
became believers. Peter did not just go to Joppa to help, it was God that willed him to go.
This shows that Peter is also an obedient follower of God. He knew God needed him to
spread his power and heal these people. This also shows his true obedience to God’s will
and power. And the people of Lydda and Joppa both see and feel these miracles of the
power of God which led them to believe in God. The believers made a choice to believe
in God once they had seen the full magnitude of his power through Peter.

3.
The question of goals
The goal of this passage would be to accept the will and power of God. And to
take his miracles that he performed through Peter as proof that his power is real. This
miracle drives us to become closer with the Lord, and to believe in his power. In the
reading it says, “Our goals or causes ought to be defined by the Scriptures and God’s
calling on our life as Christians” (Cartwright and Hulshof, p. 178, 2019). God called on
Peter to be a healer for the people in Lydda and Joppa. And he used him to spread the
belief of God’s power. The non-believers after seeing this miracle began believe in God
and his power. It ultimately became their goal to spread the miracles that had happened
and to get others to believe as well. Another goal displayed in the passage is with Tabitha
herself. She is described as leading a selfless and charitable life, which is a goal that most
Christians have.
4.
The question of discernment
The reading describes a discerning person as someone who “is able to examine
his surroundings and identify the things that are aligned with the viewpoint of God. It is
this person who can determine an appropriate action without having a list of things to do
or things to avoid” (Cartwright and Hulshof, p. 179, 2019). This is the perfect definition
to describe Peter and his actions in the passage. Peter was told about Tabitha’s way of life
and was shown her wares and garments she had crafted before she fell ill and died.
Through God’s eyes Peter was able to see that Tabitha was worthy of God’s miracle. She
had shown that she lived a life of righteousness. She treated others and saw others
through God as well by doing everything she could for other people instead of herself.
Both Peter and Tabitha had shown discernment because they both not only were able to
see the world through God’s eyes but it was God’s will flowing through them that led
their actions.
