W02 Gospel Research and Insight
Name: Garrett Arnold
Instructions
Follow the steps below to complete this activity. Save this document with your name in the filename. When you have completed this activity and answered all the questions, follow the instructions in your course to submit the document for grading and feedback.
Step 01
Read the two quotes explaining "principles"
below and then carefully review and ponder sections 77-85.
"That word principle in the revelation is a very important one. A principle is an enduring truth, a law, a rule you can adopt to guide you in making decisions. Generally, principles are not spelled out in detail. That leaves you free to find your way with an enduring truth, a principle, as your anchor" (President Boyd K. Packer, Ensign, May 1996, 17)
.
“As you seek spiritual knowledge, search for principles. Carefully separate them from the detail used to explain them. Principles are concentrated truth, packaged for application to a wide variety of circumstances. A true principle makes decisions clear even under the most confusing and compelling circumstances. It is worth great effort to organize the truth we gather to simple statements of principle. I have tried to do that with gaining spiritual knowledge" (Elder Richard G. Scott, Ensign, November 1993, 86).
Step 02
Using 500-600 words
, describe some principles that help you better understand the priesthood,
as taught by the Lord to Joseph Smith and others involved in the Restoration of the Gospel. In your description, you need to include the following:
Three principles from section 84
Two additional principles from the other sections for a total of five principles, with no more than one principle from any particular section other than Doctrine and Covenants 84.
And for each principle found, include the following:
Provide the scripture or section context where the truth, law, or rule is set forth.
State the principle discovered.
Conclude with an action statement that will guide you in making future decisions. (You may want to consider using one of your discovered principles as you prepare to complete your first required Disciple Learning Project.)
Example
Scripture:
"Wherefore, be faithful; stand in the office which I have appointed unto you; succor the weak, lift up the hands which hang down, and strengthen the feeble knees" (D&C 81:5)
Principle Statement:
Part of faithfully fulfilling any priesthood calling or errand is to succor, lift, and strengthen those
you serve.
Action Statement:
I will look at my various responsibilities (i.e. husband, father, home teacher, member of a Bishopric, neighbor) and consider ways to better succor, lift, and service others.
Delving into the principles of the priesthood as elucidated in the revelations given to Joseph Smith and others during the Restoration of the Gospel, the Doctrine and Covenants proves to be a fount of wisdom. Section 84 stands as a foundational source, offering three key principles, while other sections contribute additional perspectives on the nature and responsibilities of the
priesthood.
Principle 1: Obedience and Humility in Receiving the Priesthood
In Doctrine and Covenants 84:33-44, the Lord declares, "For whoso is faithful unto the obtaining these two priesthoods...shall enter into my rest." The principle derived from this passage emphasizes that priesthood holders should approach their calling with a pure heart and a willingness to obey God's commandments. As the scripture affirms, obedience and humility are the gateways to entering into the rest promised by the Lord.
Action Statement: In fulfilling my responsibilities in the priesthood, I will cultivate an attitude of humility and obedience. Recognizing the sacred nature of the calling, I will strive to align my actions with God's commandments.
Principle 2: Power and Authority of the Priesthood
Expanding our understanding, Doctrine and Covenants 84:19-22 states, "This greater priesthood administereth the gospel and holdeth the key of the mysteries of the kingdom." The
Lord unequivocally outlines the inherent power and authority of the priesthood. The principle here is that priesthood holders bear divine authority to act in God's name and perform sacred ordinances.
Action Statement: Exercising this power with reverence and respect, I acknowledge the sacred nature of the ordinances performed.
Principle 3: Enduring to the End
The theme of endurance resonates throughout Doctrine and Covenants 84, particularly in verses 20-22, where the Lord teaches, "But he that endureth not unto the end, the same is he that is also hewn down and cast into the fire." This principle underscores the lifelong commitment of faithful service expected from priesthood holders.
Action Statement: I will cultivate enduring faithfulness, recognizing that commitment extends throughout one's life and requires perseverance in times of trial.
Principle 4: Personal Worthiness
Beyond section 84, Doctrine and Covenants 121:34-46 emphasizes the importance of personal worthiness, stating, "Let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly." The principle is clear: individuals must maintain a virtuous and pure lifestyle to retain the blessings and authority of the priesthood.
Action Statement: Actively striving for personal worthiness, I understand that moral and ethical conduct directly impacts my ability to fulfill priesthood responsibilities effectively.
Principle 5: Love and Service
Doctrine and Covenants 4:1-7, while not explicitly about the priesthood, speaks to the principles of love and service. The scripture advises, "Remember faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, brotherly kindness, godliness, charity, humility, diligence." These principles, fundamental to understanding the priesthood's purpose, underscore that priesthood
holders are called to serve with love and selflessness.
Action Statement: Rooted in love and motivated by a desire to serve actively, I seek opportunities to use my priesthood to bless and uplift others.
In conclusion, these principles, grounded in the scriptures, offer a comprehensive understanding of the priesthood's nature and responsibilities. By incorporating these principles into one's life, individuals can approach priesthood service with humility, recognize the divine authority it carries, endure faithfully, maintain personal worthiness, and serve others with love. These principles, coupled with scripture, serve as guiding lights for making decisions and fulfilling roles as disciples in the Restoration of the Gospel, providing a robust foundation for the Disciple Learning Project and beyond.

Here are some questions to consider in writing this paragraph:
o
Was there a particular “one-liner” in these revelations that captures your greatest insight?
o
What was your biggest “aha” moment in studying these revelations?
o
What do you hope to do better as a result of what you have studied?
This week's study of the revelations, particularly in Doctrine and Covenants sections 84, 121, and 4, brought forth a profound insight that resonated deeply with me. The line from Doctrine and Covenants 121:34, "Let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly," stood out as a guiding principle for personal conduct. The insight revolves around the significance of cultivating virtuous thoughts continuously. My biggest ‘aha’ moment was recognizing the transformative power of virtuous thinking in maintaining personal worthiness and priesthood effectiveness. As a result, I hope to do better in consciously and consistently allowing virtuous thoughts to shape my actions and decisions. This insight serves as a catalyst for a more deliberate and intentional effort to purify my thoughts, ensuring they align with the virtuous standards set forth in the scriptures. By internalizing and applying this principle, I aspire to enhance my personal character, deepen my commitment to living the principles of the gospel, and fulfill my priesthood responsibilities with greater integrity and effectiveness.
