instructions in your course to submit the document for grading and feedback.
Step 01
Carefully read and review Section 2-5 and 10 of Doctrine and Covenants.
Step 02
Use
200-300 words
to describe
three
specifc meaningful explanations of lessons God was
teaching Joseph.
For each lesson found, including the following:
Scripture Reference
(This should be the reference from the D&C sections studied that
inspired your selection of this principle)
Explain the key ideas
(What God wanted Joseph to learn)
Ideas on how learning this lesson would help Joseph be successful
in his call to bring
forth the Book of Mormon and to serve as a prophet of God.
D&C 3:1-3
Joseph Smith's disappointment was unbearable when he lost the 116-page manuscript
translated from the frst part of the Book of Mormon. Many thoughts would come to an
ordinary mind to take matters into hands, but the Lord gave Joseph a very important lesson.
“The Lord’s cause is one eternal round”. He wanted to teach Joseph that no matter what men
might do to stop the work from progressing, the Lord’s plan will always come to pass. In this
instant, the Lord wanted Joseph to be calm and not think about what had happened or that
which was to come.
D&C 4
The issue of serving pertains to those who have the desire and those who are called.
Many in Joseph's life were called, but few were chosen to spread the word to all nations. God
wanted Joseph to be aware that anyone with a desire to share and spread the gospel is entitled
to the work. This helped him send many to different lands to spread the gospel. This also
contributed to the spread of the good news of the Book of Mormon to all the lands afar. Thus,
inviting people to come unto Christ and learn of the last dispensation.
D&C 10:1-24
No matter how Joseph Smith did good for our Lord, the wicked would come on him
heavily with arms of destruction and hate. We learn about how the devil stirs up the hearts of
the wicked to oppose the Lord’s work. Joseph was being taught that even though he was called
and well protected, temptation would be a daily thing. This helped him to always be prepared
for anything that the wicked may throw.
Step 03
Use
300-400 words
to write a personal reflection of a life experience on how the Lord has
taught you, like Joseph, a similar truth or lesson you discovered. (This may have come to your
mind as you studied about Joseph’s experience.)
This brought back memories of my time on a full-time mission. I went to Manila, Philippines for
my MTC and returned to Pakistan to serve my country. I was in a hotel with my companion as
we had a zone conference with our mission president. In the morning, we were getting ready for
the zone conference and my companion was taking shower, Satan tempted me, and I took my
bag and skipped from the hotel and went to my home as we were in my hometown. As I
reached my home, within a couple of hours I realized that this was the biggest mistake of my
life, and I had a feeling like Joseph Smith had when he lost 116 pages of a manuscript. I am
unable to express how desolate I felt. My testimony about the church remained unchanged. I
had been praying and repenting for my mistake. What have I done to myself? The next morning,
I was amazed when someone knocked on the door and discovered that my mission president
was there. I was frightened. He set down and asked me if I believe in the Heavenly Father and
Jesus Christ. He asked if I have a testimony of the restored gospel. Because I never lost my
testimony, I was confdent enough to share it with him. He inquired if I was interested in
building my house with stone or sand. He asked me to come back because my answer was
stone. This was something I was looking forward to, therefore, I accepted this immediately and
served faithfully for two years and returned with honor. That day I learned that many are called,
but few are chosen, and I was one of them who is chosen. That was the time that changed my
whole life. I never looked back after that day.
Step 04
Reflect on the insights you gained this week. Write a
150-250 word paragraph
; describe what
the
single most powerful insight
was that came to you as you studies this week’s revelations
and what you hope to do with it.
Your paragraph should contain:
o
A description of what stood out to you.
o
What you hope to do better as a result of this new or deeper understanding you
have been given.
Here are some questions to consider in writing this paragraph:
o
Was there a particular “one=liner” in these revelations that captures your
greatest insight?
o
What was your biggest “aha” moment in studying these revelations?
o
What do you hope to do better as a result of what you have studied?
One thing that stood up is having the knowledge that it is not only me who gets tempted. I am
not the one who is constantly being ambushed by the devil and his followers. It's a good feeling
to know that fact, and it gives me the courage, faith, and strength to hold on to the rod. At
times, I would feel weak, sit, and relax, but now I can confdently say that I am also giving others
advice on how to combat the devil and his followers. I will always choose the right in all
circumstances based on what I have studied this week. Sometimes it feels good to choose the
easier wrong, but this week’s lesson has taught me to always choose what is right and choose
that difficult path, for nothing is permanent, everything will be alright if I have faith. One other
thing I will always do is share these sacred truths with others and help them realize that they’re
not alone in their moments of sadness and trials. The Lord is with them, and he is going to bless
them after the trial of their faith.
