1 Self-reflexive Essay Self-reflexive Essay Discussion Forum Review When I first started this semester, I was still somewhat undecided between my Psychology major and the possibly of pursuing Social Work. Now, approaching the end of this course, I can share my gratitude for the opportunity to deepen my understanding of the role of Social Work in Canada, and to this course’s contribution to my decision.
2 The first part of the course brought me a broad understanding of International Social Work. Reflecting on my fourth post I can notice the importance it had to me as an immigrant to this country. To write that post I drew from my personal experience of living in a developing country for most of my life and then moving to downtown Toronto in my mid twenties. It was interesting to reflect on both sides of economic globalization from that perspective. Another enriching aspect of this experience was the chance to become more integrated to Canadian society. And this change is noticeable in my posts throughout this course. Working with the resources provided, I was able to access reliable sources for statistics and guidelines that set the framework to Social Work in Canada. Which might seem not so important at a first glance, but it contributed enormously to my confidence as a student. Finally, reviewing my posts I noticed how my personal values have become more clearly defined. More than once we were asked to reflect on and draw from the list of values presented by the Canadian Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics while writing our assignments. Doing that was probably the most important step in deciding between majors. While I ultimately made the choice to stay on the path to become a psychologist, I now feel much more prepared to navigate a system in which social workers and psychologists can work together. Self Assessment Looking back on my contributions in the forum and keeping the Evaluative Rubric in mind, I see the progress I made not only in assimilating the course’s content but also in developing my writing. I made sure to build on the feedback given after each assignment, showing my commitment to improvement. I am now more comfortable and confident researching and citing websites and academic papers.
3 I suggest my grade for the forum posts to reflect the grades on my assignments, and the partial grade I have for this course, which now lies at 81%. Breaking it down to the Evaluative Rubric my assessment would be: Content /25: 21 . Clearly addresses the intention of the assignment. Shows good insightful reflection based on personal values, beliefs, and experiences. Draws on some examples from past learning. Shows some integration of new knowledge tied to the course content and materials exemplified by the use of citations and a reference list. Writing Quality /5: 3.5. Ideas are reasonably well-communicated and organized. Writing has few spelling, grammatical, and sentence-structure errors. Sentences may be varied and/or effective. Improvement encouraged to achieve consistent university-level communication. More than anything, I appreciate your feedback and the chance to practice academic writing on subjects I am passionate about, such as systemic racism and mental health stigma. I also look forward to becoming more engaged in the pursuit of social justice, which was one of the most challenging subjects of this course for me. This is my very first semester of university in Canada and my first time pursuing formal education in the English language. Thank you for contributing to my academic journey.
