d.p 5.1 Evaluate some of the primary considerations, specifically related to counselling contexts, you might need to take into account in creating an effective survey that minimizes bias and sampling error. When creating an effective survey it is important the research carefully considerate the wording a structure of item, along with making sure the items effectively answer the empirical question (Goodwin & Goodwin, 2017). In a counselling setting, a survey would be used to more gain insight on a clients views or opinions on mental health or even on the effectiveness of psychotherapy opposed to a questionnaire which would be used to assess a particular aspect of a clients mental health. Throughout the research done in this course for the assignments, one of the biases that came up often was that participants are often people who are already interest or somewhat involved in what is being research. For example, a study about men’s experiences accessing help for depression and the barriers , most of the participants are individuals who have already sought help, or were referred by their doctor who has given them a diagnosis of depression, there were very few who this wasn’t the case for. This would be self-selection bias and possibly skew the results. I think the best way to reduce this bias would be to collect a random sample of men’s information to then send them the survey. Another way I could think of reducing bias would be conducting the survey in a doctors office or hospital setting, from personal experience at sick kids hospital in Toronto there have been researchers who have came in and gave surveys about a variety of things but only gave it their target respondents. Is there any other type of possible bias from the example topic I gave? What is it and how would you reduce the bias and sampling error? (Word count: 280) Goodwin, K. A., & Goodwin, C. J. (2017). D.P 5.2 Evaluate some of the strengths and limitations of small N designs, and under what circumstances a researcher might opt to use a small N design instead of a more powerful statistical methodology. Justify your rationale with an example of an applied behavioral analysis and a case study design. Goodwin, C. J., & Goodwin, K. A. (2017) discussed how small N designs are beneficial and used to study one concept and often when it is a rare population or when practical considerations make it impossible to use a large N design. Small N designs are beneficial when trying to understand the level of behavioural changes in each participant that could be obscured when looking at summarized data from a large number of participants. a limitation to small N designs are that they generally lack external validity. An example of useful small N design would be the behaviour analysis of 5 youth with Oppositional defiant disorder(ODD), and how individual or family therapy contribute to the improvement of their behaviour. This would allow researchers to watch how the youth’s behaviour changes and the level of impact therapy has on this behaviour change. What are some ways to improve the validity of the small N design?
