D.Q. 6.1 I didn’t notice my cultural identity until I was in the 3 rd grade until a boy in my class pointed out I was “black” ( I am Biracial) and then he said he doesn’t like black people. From that day on I would say that I have always been between 6 and 10 on the scale. On the days where I am on the lower end of the scale are the days I have been able to use my British heritage to my advantage or I am not discriminated against because I am a “light skin”. For this discussion I was doing research on intersectionality and Biracial individuals, and a really great study by Albuja et al., (2020) that mentioned Dual-Minority Biracial people and how they cant not claim a high-status white identity. Along with the fact that minority-white biracial people often experience identity denial and conflict. It will be cited down below if anyone is interested. I reminded me of the privilege I have. An area of intersectionality that I have experienced was a mix of because I identify as a woman and due to my middle-class status. I was told by a former male friend of mine that because of the home that my family and I live in, and that fact that women “get a lot of things handed to them” that I have never struggled, had to work hard, my car got handed to me and that I am lucky because I get an OSAP grant for being disabled. I grew up with a single mother who worked full- time, and went to college while raising my sister and I, she worked hard and earned everything. This set an example that made me the hard worker I am today and showed me that we don’t need handouts. These experiences of intersectionality in my personal life, I think will positively influence my work with client by reinforcing a intersectional lens which will help me further understand the experience and identities of my clients, therefore I will have cultural empathy (Collins, 2018). Does anybody have an experience of relationality and intersectionality that they would like to share? ( word count 358) Collins, S. (2018).
