Game Name: Sorry! Game Synopsis: Players must move their four pieces from the start around the board to home using the cards drawn each turn—the first person to get all four home wins. 1. What developmental level is the game designed for, and how do you know? (Please, do not just say, because it says it on the box.) Pre-operation children would be the best age group for this because of the straightforward instructions. The game is very intuitive which is perfect for the preoperational child 2. Does this toy or game require prior knowledge? List a few areas of p.k. (Piaget/Vygotsky)? The only prior knowledge that is required for this game is numbers and the ability to count. 3. Does this toy or game capitalize on the child’s ability to classify (Piaget)? How? No the game doesn’t make you classify because all of the the game pieces are the same and move in the same way. 4. How does this toy or game require the children to reverse their thinking or reverse a process (Piaget)? This game does not require reversible thinking which is perfect for a pre-operations child 5. Does this toy or game use seriation (Piaget)? The game has seriation because each player gets a different color and they have go to their own house which is the same color as their game pieces 6. Does this toy or game require the children to think hypothetically or abstractly (Piaget?) The child could think hypothetically when there are cards where they could split their
move or go backwards 7. Does this toy or game offer learning opportunities outside of a child’s ZPD (Vygotksy)? (If not, create an example of how you might expand a child’s learning in the game.) (combined) I think this game allows for learning opportunities in the variation of card types because 90% of the cards work the same, but a few have special properties that require thought outside of a preoperational child’s ability. This allows opportunities to practice those skills that they dont have yet. 8. Does this toy or game provide opportunities for learning conversations between a child and a More Knowledgeable Other (Vygotksy)? Give examples of areas where scaffolding may be needed. (combined) The 7 card allows for the player to split their seven “steps” between two different pieces. This requires hypothetical thinking that is not developmentally appropriate for a pre-operations child but that allows for a conversation with an MKO that might require scaffolding like the MKO helping them choose the two pieces they use or decide how many to give each piece. 9. Does this toy or game provide opportunities to use cultural tools, which tools (give several examples if possible) (Vygotksy)? There are not many opportunities to use cultural tools in the game Sorry!. One instance might be the symbolic nature of the color-coded pieces and homes.
