Third Bibliographic Information, for Substance Use and Addiction Groups. Wendy Lipps College of Arts and Science Regent University PSYC 406 Group Facilitation Dr. Pamela Robinson, Ph. D. June 3, 2023 Third Bibliographic Information, for Substance Use and Addiction Groups 1.) Grim, B. J., & Grim, M. E. (2019). Belief, Behavior, and Belonging: How Faith is Indispensable in Preventing and Recovering from Substance Abuse. Journal of Religion and Health, 58(5), pgs. 1713–1752, https://doi.org/10.1007/s10943 -019-00876-w This paper evaluates the extensive empirical data on the role of faith in both preventing substance misuse and assisting those who already have it to recover from it. We find that most 12-step programs and fellowships, which were first made popular by Alcoholics Anonymous and emphasize relying on God or a Higher Power to be sober, incorporate a spirituality-based component into 73% of addiction treatment programs in the USA. Faith-based volunteer support groups contribute 316.6 billion in savings to the US economy. Negative experience with religion example clergy sex abuse has been a factor contributing to substance abuse some 84% of scientific studies show that faith is a positive factor in addiction prevention or recovery. In conclusion, the value of faith-based oriented approaches is indisputable when helping prevention and recovery. Grim, B. J., & Grim, M. E. (2019). Correction to: Belief, Behavior, and Belonging: How Faith is Indispensable in Preventing and Recovering from Substance Abuse. Journal of Religion and Health, 58(5), pgs. 1751–1752. https://doi.org/10.1007/s10943-019-00898-4 “As a clear indication of the US government’s ongoing recognition of the important role of faith-based communities in addressing substance abuse, the Department of Health and Human
Services’ Center for Faith and Opportunity Initiatives recently published an Opioid Epidemic Practical Toolkit: Helping Faith-Based and Community Leaders Bring Hope and Healing to Our Communities (US Department of Health and Human Services 2018a, August 3).” Figure 4 has a typo in the second line of the caption. The correction is as follows “Drug death data: National Institute on Drug Abuse (2018); 2017 data provisional.” Is the corrected name to the original article. The original article (Grim and Grim 2019) contained the old name for the Department of Health and Human Services Center above the section “ Faith’s Relationship with Substance Abuse in General”. 2.) Laudet, A. B. (2003). Attitudes and Beliefs About 12-Step Groups Among Addiction Treatment Clients and Clinicians: Toward Identifying Obstacles to Participation. Substance Use & Misuse, 38(14), pgs. 2017–2047. https://doi.org/10.1081/JA-120025124 12-step groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, are associated with better outcomes among substance users when it comes to recovery during and after initial treatment. The 12-step groups are a form of help that aids individuals who have common behaviors to give each other mutual support. This has become a traditional part of treatment that is without professional help. Sometimes professionals refer clients to join these groups. Both clinicians and clients find that the 12-step programs help with the recovery process. The obvious obstacles are centered around the motivation and readiness for change, and seeing you need help. Resistance comes in with the religious aspect of the program’s emphasis on “powerlessness”. Clinicians must include the importance of motivation to change and assess the client’s beliefs. Case by case basis when it comes to the 12-step programs. Find a good fit between the needs of the client and the tools and support available through 12-step groups.
