PSY 328 Module Five Activity Template First, read the Shapiro Library articles, Psychologist Stanley Milgram Begins Obedience-to-Authority Experiments , Stanford Prison Experiment , and Moving Personality Beyond the Person-Situation Debate . Next, complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Your responses should each be about 2 to 5 sentences in length. Analyzing Psychological Experiments o Describe the major takeaways from the Milgram experiments. Major takeaways from the Milgram experiment are that a person will go to extreme measures with another person if they are under authoritarian watch. We as humans will also go against our better judgment and mistreat another human because of authoritarian presence. o Describe the major takeaways from the Stanford prison experiment. Stanford prison major takeaways are that when you depersonalize and demoralize a group of people, they will undergo severe psychological stress and lose sense of self. In contrast, assigning people to become an authoritarian figure can quickly consume their mind and morality, causing them to act outside their character. Both ends of the spectrum result in psychological manipulation based off being placed in a certain group rather than their individual traits. o Describe the ethical implications of these experiments. The ethical implications of both these experiments revolve around who we are as individuals and who we can become when put into certain situations. Milgram’s experiment showed that even under authoritative watch, humans can show empathy and question the morality of the instructor when told to cause harm to another. Contrastingly, the Stanford prison experiment showed that when grouped together and given instruction to cause harm to others, we succeed our own morality and follow the leaders in acting outside our own beliefs. The question is ultimately are we in control of our own actions or are we always subjected to be puppets to a larger, more authoritative figure? Implications of the Person-Situation Debate o Describe examples of behaviors that highlight trait-based stability in the workplace or school. An example of trait-based stability in the workplace or school would be grouping together individuals who will statistically work well together but vary enough in traits that each person can contribute in different ways, allowing for easier work distribution. Having a group with similar traits but varying levels allows for individuality to shine through while still maintaining common ground. o Describe examples of behaviors that highlight personality states in the workplace or school. Behaviors that highlight personality states in the workplace or school can be shown with the example of group presentations. The person who decides to speak majority of the presentation showcases extraversion and it’s possible the group agreed 1
that the speaker presents the most agreeableness so that they will be able to engage more effectively to their audience. Whoever decides to delegate roles and gather most information showcases intellect higher than their peers. Conscientiousness and emotional stability should be presented amongst all in the group to efficiently work together and resolve any conflict without deterring from their mission. o Explain how your perspectives on your interactions with others might be impacted by the person-situation debate. My perspective on interactions with others is only slightly impacted by the person-situation debate because I have worked in the service industry since I was a teenager, making me excellent at switching my personality depending on person and situation. While one guest might enjoy my dry humor and witty banter, I can just as easily switch into a more professional rapport with another guest a few seats away. Each guest has their own experience, and my job is to make sure that it’s a good one, allowing me to be a chameleon of personality. o In Module Three, you were asked the extent to which you thought personality could change over time. Explain whether your response to that question has changed or stayed the same as a result of studying the person-situation debate. My response to personality changing over time has stayed the same after studying the person-situation debate. Being able to channel certain traits at certain times is a result of being self-aware enough around others to know when to showcase those traits and when to be reserved. I recently heard that only 20% of the population is self-aware, which is astonishing to me. We should stay in an ever-evolving state of mind, but the important part is being emotionally mature enough to stay true to ourselves and our morals in the face of adversity. 2
