Kiley Baldwin Dr. Wise PSY 331-001 November 14, 2023 Chapter 12 In this paper, I chose to write about my position on charter schools and format my message to a principal as if I were writing to them about why I thought their school would be the best if I had a child who wanted to attend. In my message, I mostly discuss the advantages and benefits of a first-grade student attending a charter school. According to what I could find on a handful of Missouri charter school websites, it appears that most of them share aspects of both public and private schools since most are strict on school uniforms but also provide a range of teaching techniques, extracurricular activities, and parent/guardian involvement. However, the one aspect I did not touch on in the example below is the cons behind charter schools. Like any educational institution, they are not always perfect, and not every student thrives in the same type of school for each grade. Some do better than others depending on the teaching methods used and how much help they get outside of the classroom. Depending on the state and school, charter schools can sometimes have a more difficult time keeping students to stay than enrolling them. This can be due to a variety of reasons, such as having to be put on a waitlist to enroll, they might not get as much funding as public schools do meaning parents and guardians must volunteer more, and there is also a high turnover rate with teachers in charter schools as there is in public schools.
Overall, depending on the state, reviews, and faculty charter schools can be a great option for a child who might not do as well in another school setting, but they are not always as good as they seem based on many different factors. Dear Principal Smith, I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to express my genuine interest in enrolling my child, Violet, in your acclaimed charter school for the following academic year in 1st grade. After careful study and thorough investigation, I am confident that your school is the appropriate educational setting for nurturing and supporting my child's academic and personal growth. Allow me to explain why I made this decision: First and foremost, I've heard that your institution is well known for its creative curriculum and specialized programs. I am very impressed by the blended learning element implemented in classes since it aligns perfectly with my child's interests and learning style. This unique approach, in my opinion, promises an interesting and meaningful educational experience that goes beyond the standard approaches commonly seen in public schools, such as extended lectures and exams. I also like that real-world learning will be incorporated into their education, as I believe even at such a young age, my child needs to learn how to apply concepts she learns inside the classroom to the outside world and how she can start developing critical thinking, creativity, and responsibility early on in life with examples she learns in class. Second, I believe that flexibility in curriculum design and the workshop method is a huge benefit to my child's learning. I am reassured that this adaptability will cater to my child's
specific learning needs since it will help her learn in multiple ways and allow her to identify the type of learning approach that works best for her. I also enjoy how the class is divided into sections that are evenly spaced out depending on the topic, and how rotation is encouraged. This strategy, I believe, will make studying enjoyable for my child and assist her in adapting to diverse learning styles. Third, I appreciate your school's emphasis on family involvement and community engagement. The ability for us parents and guardians to actively participate in fundraising and organizing for our students and instructors contributes to a great sense of community. I am excited to be a part of this collaborative educational atmosphere. Finally, I am convinced that enrolling my child in your charter school will offer her a well-rounded and rewarding educational experience. I believe the school's commitment to creativity, customized instruction, and community involvement is exactly aligned with our educational beliefs and objectives for my daughter. Thank you for considering our application. I am eager to discuss this further and address any questions you may have. I appreciate your time and attention to this matter.
