2 Exposure to Violence Modern video games have evolved much further than people could have imagined thirty years ago . The emersion is unmatched especial when it comes to children and the effect certain video games may or may not have . is it healthy for someone to see hard, but fake violence? I provoke a thought, is there a difference in the type of people that play violent video games and un violent video games? I see this amongst my own peers . Some people only play first person shooters . Others play sports games or role-playing games . Almost all games have some sort of violence in them . As a moral and appropriate society where do we draw the line? Well as of now there are age limits in places that most game stores follow . The alternative is downloading it legally onto your personal device which is much easier to bypass the age requirements needed . I draw another similarity between the increase in violent crime and the increase to exposure the average person has . Could it be that exposure to violence has made us more violent? See, Anderson 2004 “Three findings are particularly important . First, as more studies of violent video games have been conducted, the significance of violent video game effects on key aggression and helping-related variables has become clearer . Second, the claim (or worry) that poor methodological characteristics of some studies has led to a false, inflated conclusion about violent video game effects is simply wrong . Third, video game studies with better methods typically yield bigger effects . ” The influence is there but why do some people argue it .
3 I think the effects will only compound exponentially as video games become more and more realistic not only though violence . With virtual reality the possibilities are endless . Could there be something worse than just violence? What about a virtual brothel where someone can go to haver virtual sex? Is it an online game where real people can meet up virtually or is it a role- playing game? Are there age restrictions on access this game? It may sound like something in the future and that it will be a long time until those games are here . They are here and we are just beginning to see the effect it may have on people . See, Franco 2022 “ Self-efficacy, be it general or specific to sexuality, was one of the most frequently chosen outcome variables across the different games . Choose Your Own Adventure considered 4 domains of sexual self-efficacy: condom negotiation self-efficacy, condom use self-efficacy, situational self-efficacy (the ability to control a situation that might be conducive to sex), and refusal self-efficacy (the ability to say no to sexual intercourse) . However, the findings were mixed . ” This Article is in support of sexual behavior in video games and how it may promote safe sex . The more exposure a person has to a healthy way of sex the greater chance they have of practicing a healthier sexual lifestyle . In some ways this is good for our society . It will help educate people and expose people to safe sex practices to help combat the contracting of sexually transmitted diseases and adolescent pregnancy . The internet is like the wild west in ways . there is almost unlimited access and no one to really stop someone if they are determined enough . Sexually explicit games are on the rise and out there . However, often the negative impact of online pornography consumption and sexually explicit video games is omitted in discussions at school, home or even the academic literature for numerous reasons such as feelings of discomfort or lack of awareness . ” This may be a harsh comparison but a video game that is sexually charged has the ability to turn into a skinner box of sorts for humans . Just clicking the constant gratification button to follow their basic sexual actions . Access to violent overly violent and sexually charged video games cannot have a positive effect on society . Further limitation must be put in place to regulate an inevitable nightmare if it is not addressed . Its ramifications could be detrimental . We are better than instant gratification . I feel like that is the direction our society is headed in a world full of people addicted to social media and video games though different vises whether it be violence, gambling, or sexually motivated .
