Teacher-directed instructional strategies is based on the teacher providing lectures, demonstrations, and instructions to the students in the classroom. This instructional strategy is often utilized when introducing new skills or concepts to the students (Seifert & Sutton, 2022). Lectures and reading assignments would be a great example of teacher-directed learning. A teacher who assigns reading assignments is directly instructing their students to read the chapters or journal to prepare for a class assignment or discussion. According to Seifert & Sutton (2022), “There are many ways to organize new information that are especially well-suited to teacher-directed instruction. A common way is simply to ask students to outline information read in a text or heard in a lecture” (pg.1). And one last teacher- directed strategy that I found would be having the teacher ask their students direct questions. These questions can be based on the lesson they just learned or asking the students to repeat back in their own words what the lesson was about. Learner-directed strategies are based on giving the students a sense of control in their education. Ormond (2020) states, “By definition, learner-directed instruction places control of learning activities largely in students’ hands. Yet for all but the most self-regulating of students, learner-directed instruction requires some teacher control and guidance” (pg. 486). Learner-directed instruction would be creating a classroom open discussion. This will allow the students to bounce ideas off on another and share common thoughts. Another learner-directed example would be discovery learning. Discovery learning is when, “students derive information for themselves—perhaps by randomly exploring and manipulating objects or perhaps by performing systematic experiments. Hands-on discovery experiences can often convey ideas that language alone can’t fully communicate” (Ormond, 2020, pg. 489). I think discovery learning is great, especially for the younger students to be able to learn hands-on way to manipulate and think about the lessons. Teacher-directed strategy is best used when introducing new topics and ideas to the classroom. Learner- directed strategies is best used when learning in small groups or experimenting. In my opinion, I don’t thinks is easy to say which one would be a better choice based on the diversity of the classroom. I think this is really based on the teacher’s comfortability with teaching, the group of students in the classroom, and the commonality of skill sets the students share. I think that learner- directed learning might best benefit the students who are more comfortable in their learning. This is because they are able to self guide themselves whereas students who show struggle might best learn when the teacher is presenting the lessons and laying out the assignments.
