Article 2 Assignment – PSYC 4033 Dr. McDonald – Fall 2023 Article 2 Rowland et al. (2014)—date due: Oct 24 th at beginning of class Your name: Casey Noyes ______________________________________ Instructions: Please use this and only this sheet to answer the questions regarding your assigned article; in other words, be succinct . Incomplete sentences are acceptable as long as they get the message across. Use the space allotted and no more! USE YOUR OWN WORDS – NO PLAGIARISM, NO QUOTING, NO CHAT GPT/AI!!! Most importantly, put answers in everyday language . Motivation for the study: To further understand how retrieving target information can affect retention of related information by expanding on/replicating the Anderson et al. (1994) study of retrieval-induced forgetting. ______________________________________________________ Hypotheses/Predictions Exp’t 1 only- There will be a lower recall performance for RP- items than for NRP items, indicating retrieval-induced forgetting. RP+ items will have the highest level of recall performance. _______________________________________________________ Independent Variable(s) EXP’T 1 only only list ones used; there may or may not be extra lines In addition, clearly circle between or within subjects for each IV 1. Level of retrieval practice _____________________________ Between Sub/ Within Sub 2. Categories presented during practice phase _______________ Between Sub /Within Sub Control Variable(s) EXP’T 1 only —list two 1. Level of exposure to each pair (time studied + number of times shown) ______________ 2. Retrieval cues ____________________________________________________________ Dependent Variable(s) EXP’T 1 only —only list ones used; there may or may not be extra lines 1. Recall test performance (number of correct responses) ___________________________ 2. ________________________________________________________________________ List at least two differences between experiments 1 and 2 in terms of how they were run 1. Reduced number of lists presented (4 instead of 18) ______________________________ 2. Experimental lists randomly chosen for each participant __________________________
Results – a) interpret Figure 1—experiment 1 on page 5. What does it show? Does it match the predictions? b) interpret Figure 1—experiment 2 on page 5. What does it show? Does it match the predictions? a) Figure 1(experiment 1) shows superior recall performance for RP+ items compared to the other two types, with the lowest being in RP- items. This signifies that the retrieval- induced forgetting effect did occur and matches the original hypothesis. _____________ b) Figure 1 (experiment 2) shows similar, yet less significant, results to experiment 1 with RP+ items being the highest, then NRP, and then RP-. This also shows evidence of the RIF effect and agrees with the predictions. _____________________________________ Relation to class material – use pages 261-265 in the Radvansky et al. textbook to find a study that uses a similar memory test to the one in Experiment 3. a) Give the name of the authors of that study and a brief description of their findings. b) How are the results of this study in your textbook similar or different to Experiment 3? Experiment 3 attempted to replicate the study performed by Anderson and Spellman (1995), which is discussed in detail in the textbook. In the textbook study, the authors found that RP+ items had the highest recall performance, indicating that practice improves memory. The authors also found evidence of retrieval inhibition in the RP- and NRP similar categories when compared to NRP dissimilar (control). Experiment 3 successfully replicated the results that RP+ had the highest performance when compared to NRP dissimilar, proving that practice positively affects memory. However, the experiment was unable to prove that a RIF effect occurred since there were no reliable differences in the RP- nor the NRP similar category when compared to NRP dissimilar. ________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________
