Transformational leadership is a leadership approach that causes change in individuals and social systems. In its ideal form, it creates valuable and positive change in the followers with the end goal of developing followers into leaders. A transformational leader enhances the motivation, morale, and performance of followers through many ways. These include connecting the follower's sense of identity and self to the mission and identity of the organization, being a role model for followers that inspires them, challenging followers to take greater ownership for their work, and understanding the strengths and weaknesses of followers, so the leader can align followers with tasks that optimize their performance and increases productivity in the workplace. Transformational leadership is a leadership style that can inspire positive changes in those who follow. Transformational leaders usually possess characteristics and traits that are energetic, enthusiastic, and passionate. Not only are these leaders concerned and involved in the process, but they are also focused on helping every person be successful (Tucker & Russell,2004). One example of a transformational leader in the real world is WNBA player Brittney Griner from Phoenix Mercury. When Brittney Griner got released from prison her mission to make an impact on the lives of individuals in multiple ways has shown in young people and adults around the world. So many people came together for her and she got released and started to come together for others in a way she never imagined she would. One example of transformational leadership is Brittney Griner does a shoe drive each year to give back to her community and people around the world and she has other young basketball players following in her footsteps as well as her team mates joining her campaign and initiative. She consistently makes an impact whether it be on or off the basketball court and she recognizes the importance and significant changes that need to be made in the world and The last two years have been the most harrowing, transformative and illuminating period of my life, and I am grateful to be in a
place now to share my story with the world,” said Brittney Griner. “I’m proud to partner with ESPN and Disney to share this very personal story because of its incredible potential to inspire hope around the world and their proven ability to do just that.” I have been inspired by her since I was about 9 and I'm 25 now. It just goes to show how great of a leader she is in the WNBA and how she wants to make an impact in the lives of others through her leadership. I currently work in a leadership position at a school where I have team members reporting to me. The leadership style that I use is transformational leadership and sometimes authoritarian leadership only because I am new in my role. Whenever new policies or new values get put into place, I am one of the first ones to demonstrate them. Once my team sees me taking the lead, they will follow my example and have been. I care a lot about my team's ability to accomplish goals and I make sure that they are doing activities that they are best at so that they will succeed even if its hard. By giving the team a task that best suits their strengths, they will feel motivated to work and be productive at work. Employees need tasks that will challenge them but are not outside of what they can do. By implementing this type of leadership style, I have team members that are loyal to me and will follow my direction. Using this leadership style also leads to less turnover amongst the employees, which entails benefits for the organization. Less turnover means more production and more production typically means better results.
