2 Which Would You Buy? The Behavioral and Emotional Screening System (BASC-3) along with the Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment (ASEBA) are used to assess school aged children on there youthful personalities and to analyze their behaviors Both of these assessments are used in a questionnaire format. The Behavioral and Emotional Screening System assesses children’s emotional strengths and weaknesses. It is also used to gather information from several different people such as parents and teachers, those who spend time with the child being assessed. This screening system is used to quickly screen problems among school aged children (Hogan & Sink, 2017). The Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment is a multi-rate system that is used to assess the children’s personality and behavior. This test has questions about the children’s birth and health history such as how many ear infections they have along with speech problems within the family household. This assessment also gathers information from the parents regarding their children’s multiword phrases and commonly known words for their age (Flanagan & Watson, 2005). Both assessment tools gather information from several different sources besides the children such as parents and teachers, however the tools are used to access the children. Both tests are also expensive to use. The BASC-3 costs $269.50, this is for the per hand-score kit which includes the manual (Hogan & Sink, 2017). The ASEBA costs $695 for the full ADM software modules which includes the modules for all age groups used within this assessment. Computer scoring kits range from $230 to around $325 depending on the age of the children. While the software materials if purchased for a certain age group can range from $170 to $250 plus an additional cost of $220 for the scanning module (Flanagan & Watson, 2005). For the ASEBA assessment, it would be beneficial to pay the $695 for all the software. Both tests also
3 have similar testing times. The BASC-3 has a testing time of 5 to 5 minutes while the ASEBA has a testing time of 15 to 20 minutes. With the prices broken down and reviewed both tests require similar costs to use, and both tests have similar testing times. However, there are some differences between the BASC-3 and the ASEBA assessment tools. The BASC-3 is on children from ages 3 to 13 while the ASEBA is used for ages 18 months all the way up to 90 years old. These two tools have two different scoring systems. The BASC-3 uses a four-point scale with the possible responses being never, sometimes, often, and almost always (Hogan & Sink, 2017).After reviewing the responses, they are analyzed using the T- score. A T-score of 61 or below is considered normal risk, a T-score of around 61 to 70 would be considered elevated risk and T-score above 71 is considered extremely elevated risk (Hogan & Sink, 2017). The ASEBA only uses a 0-2 scale with the responses being not true, sometimes true, or true. After reviewing the responses from this scale, they are also further analyzed. These responses are analyzed into several groups based on borderline clinical range. The scores are based on several different scales. For the social and school scales, scores of 31 to 35 are borderline while scores below 31 are clinical. On the competency scale scores 0f 37 to 40 are considered borderline while scores below 37 are clinical. The T-scores 65-69 which are based on the DSM-Oriented scales are considered to borderline. Scores that are above 69 are considered clinical (Flanagan & Watson, 2017). There is a much more intense and thorough scoring process for the ASEBA tool than there is for the BASC-3 tool. I believe that the ASEBA tool is the best option for the agency to use. I chose the ASEBA over the BASC-3 because the BASC-3 is used to quickly screen for problems in children and should not be used as a final assessment and only works for a small range of children. ASEBA works with a larger range of clients. The ASEBA test is currently being in seventy-four different

4 languages so it can be used more around the world. The ASEBA has different tests for different age groups of kids (Flanagan & Watson, 2017). The ASEBA has a much more intense and thorough scoring system that bases the scores off different scales (Flanagan & Watson, 2017). They offer a test for younger kids and order kids while the BASC-3 only offers one test for all age groups. With the ASEBA offering different tests they will have more accurate results as the tests are more suited for the child’s abilities based on their age. This test will help with gaining better and effective diagnosis and treatments for the children.
