Madison Lihs November 2, 2023 Educational Strategy 4: Students with ADHD Students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are students who are more likely to struggle with meeting certain standards. ADHD students are commonly known to have issues reaching reading goals, and not meeting reading comprehension goals either. ADHD is extremely individualized and it can be different for each student with ADHD, there are different markers and tasks teachers can do in their classrooms before teaching a reading segment that can curb some of these difficulties for students with ADHD and students who struggle with reading and reading comprehension. In my history and social studies class, before we read a content heavy or particularly dense book, I will ensure my students have background knowledge on the topic, whether that is making a KWL board, or allowing them to do a preliminary search on their own and create a summary of their findings. Another thing that will be helpful is having vocabulary instruction in my lesson plans. Background knowledge is an essential contributor to reading comprehension, meaning that relevant vocabulary expansion provides students with inattention opportunities to expand their knowledge that is required to comprehend the information presented to them. There are parts of history that are not always exciting or fun to learn about and even the best of students can find their minds wandering, having a background in a topic or unit that is difficult to learn and teach can be beneficial to teachers and students alike.
