2 Adolescence 1. Define and describe your own conception of a "healthy" self-identity. (Hint: Identity is not the same as self-esteem or self-worth.) My conception of a "healthy" self-identity means having a strong sense of who I am, what I stand for, and where I belong. It involves having a clear understanding of my values, beliefs, and goals and being able to express them to others confidently. It also means having a sense of purpose and direction and feeling comfortable in my skin. A healthy self-identity is not dependent on external validation or comparison to others. Still, instead, it is an internal sense of self constantly evolving and adapting. Moreover, a healthy self-identity involves self-awareness and a willingness to accept and learn from failures and setbacks. It also includes setting boundaries, asserting oneself, and prioritizing self-care and personal growth. 2. Compare and contrast the Bible's view and the textbook's view of "healthy" self- identity. Both the Bible and the textbook emphasize the importance of a healthy self-identity in adolescence. The Bible views a healthy self-identity as being rooted in one's relationship with God and as a reflection of God's image in us. Similarly, the textbook notes the role of self- awareness and connection to values and beliefs in forming a healthy self-identity. ( Santrock, 2023). Furthermore, the Bible encourages individuals to see themselves as valuable and worthy, regardless of societal standards or expectations. It emphasizes the need for self-acceptance, self- love, and the importance of finding one's purpose and identity in God (Steinmann, 2019). The textbook also highlights the impact of family, peers, and culture on self-identity development. It discusses the importance of self-exploration and establishing one's identity separate from external influences.
3 However, the Bible and the textbook differ in their ideas of a healthy self-identity. Firstly, the textbook focuses on self-identity as an individual's understanding of themselves, including strengths, weaknesses, beliefs, and values. It emphasizes the importance of self-awareness, self- acceptance, and self-determination in developing a healthy self-identity. In contrast, the Bible views self-identity as rooted in one's relationship with God and identity in Christ (Steinmann, 2019). While the textbook discusses inner qualities, the Bible adds the component of our identity in Christ, which is essential for a healthy self-identity in God's eyes. Another difference between the two views is the emphasis on external factors. The textbook recognizes the danger of basing one's self-identity on external validation, such as societal expectations or the approval of others (Santrock, 2023). In contrast, the Bible emphasizes the danger of conforming to the patterns of this world. It encourages individuals to find their self-identity in God rather than seeking validation from others. Furthermore, the Bible's view of a healthy self-identity is more closely linked to one's sense of purpose and fulfillment. The Bible reminds us that God chooses and calls us for a specific purpose. In contrast, the textbook focuses more on self-actualization and reaching one's full potential. References Santrock, J. W. (2023). Adolescence, 18th Edition. McGraw-Hill Education.
