Report
In 1971, Dr. Philip Zimbardo conducted a study using members of the public and giving them the role of either a prisoner or a guard. Within 24 hours, guards started abusing prisoners, and the study was terminated after six days. I believe this study was reckless and devised by a sick man. I hypothesize that Dr. Zimbardo already had his answers through previous studies conducted several years earlier and recklessly created a study he knew would be a failure. Was this ethical? Are criminal acts ever ethical? Several studies on persuasion and soc ial pressure have been completed. The results confirmed that, given the proper conditions, people can be persuaded to act in any easily manipulated way. Some of these studies include: Stanley Milgram Shock Experiment had people in the roles of teachers who administered electric shocks to students if they gave the wrong answer to a question, which 63% did. (Mcloud, 2023). Solomon Asch experimented in the 1950s, investigating how social pressure from a majority group could affect a person to conform. He had a 75% rate of at least one conforming event over 12 trials. While many studies are available for review, they all point to the same conclusion. I would find it unusual that a psychologist and a professor emeritus at Stanford University would have been unaware of these studies and the results of manipulation. I also find it incredible that a well-educated man would not have known that correctional officers undergo a thorough screening process and receive many hours of training before being left to manage prisoners—California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (n.a.,2018). Perhaps he never even considered that in his pre-research planning. I can also imagine someone in the role of a make-believe prisoner, messing with the fake guards to try to make it seem like an actual situation that quickly was out of hand.
Dr. Zimbardo, as well as the team that conducted this study, I am shocked that a fine university such as Stanford allowed this study to start in the first place. After this disaster, it is hard to imagine that Dr. Zimbardo was still employed by the college but allowed to remain on the faculty and retire after 30 years. While I am sure some will not agree with my views, I would like to take another perspective on this research study. At the same time, I do understand that medical research is fundamental in society. As a medical professional for many years, I still remember our pledge to Do no Harm. Is this something the Dr and his staff are unaware of?
