Navigating Adolescence: Understanding Identity and Role Confusion in Educational Settings Throughout my educational and professional experience, my work with adolescents has been an intriguing and worthwhile experience. My engagement with them made me realize that they are at a juncture of self discovery, where they get to know their self identity, worth and explore the immediate world around them. It is worth noting that the emotional and physical changes in adolescents become very obvious. “Adolescence, transitional phase of growth and development between childhood and adulthood“ (Csikszentmihalyi, 2019). The noticeable development is however a complex one as the issues of self identity become the most prominent among them all. The course materials' exploration of the concept of identity illuminates how teenagers attempt to comprehend who they are in a variety of social, cultural, and personal circumstances. With this in place, adolescents take up roles and live towards the expectation of societal expectations. “Sociologists frequently equated adolescence with the years of secondary schooling as secondary education became a common experience. Based on these conclusions, they concluded that adolescence was a stage of life that was dependent on relatively recent developments that had removed teenagers from the labor market and prolonged their social dependency” (Kett, 2003). Erik Erikson’s theory of psychosocial developments plays a critical role in identifying the role confusion aspect of adolescents and how it occurs throughout the different stages in their lives. The confusion here lies between a conflict on who they really are. In this concept, the hallmark of this stage is the inability to come to a cohesive sense of self in the face of peer pressure, societal expectations, and personal goals. “Everybody has a developmental conflict during each stage, which needs to be overcome in order to properly develop the stage's main virtue. Erikson was fascinated by the ways in which connections and social interaction impact growth and development” (Cherry, 2022). As a facilitator, I have made conscious efforts in understanding these concepts and incorporating them into my educational setting with the ultimate aim of creating a healthy learning environment. With this in place, I interact with adolescents a lot about burning issues and topics related to self identity, their roles in society and I further encourage them to voice out their concern. In their age of self discovery, I intend on encouraging them to master the art of self expressions and engage in critical thinking activities to enhance the mediums through which they interact with others and reflect. A robust mentorship
programme can also offer students the platform where they are given the needed guidance and support they need. With this platform, adolescents interact and receive the needed and necessary feedback they require and serve as a supportive network for adolescents to navigate through their uncertainties. Aspects of reflective activities must be evident in my school curriculum as it serves as a guide in ensuring an all inclusive learning with my adolescents within the school environment. Through the integration of resources that showcase diverse cultural origins, social positions, and personal accounts, instructors can establish inclusive learning spaces that embrace uniqueness. In conclusion, I look forward to gaining a deeper understanding of adolescent experience through the professional training I receive here. With this in place, I will be able to understand their struggles and offer development opportunities to them. I intend to be more empathetic in all my strategies as I offer an all inclusive education within the diverse environment. References Cherry, K. (2022, June 22).
