Running head: Unveiling the Positive Outcomes of Apartheid Project 2: Historical Context and Introduction LaAshlee N. Valentin Southern New Hampshire University Research Plan Research Question : Aside from the financial crippling of South Africa and the displacement of Non White South Africans, which has led to their generational poverty, were there any positives that materialized from Apartheid? Introduction Apartheid was political, socioeconomic, and racial segregation in South Africa. People were classified as white, including light skinned Africans, or non-white. People were arrested for not abiding by the segregation rules. Companies from different countries who disagreed with the policies removed their money from South Africa and relocated their businesses in protest. White South Africans ruled everything in an attempt to diminish the political power of other races. The segregation also was amongst Tribes. Apartheid was not brought about to protect , provide for, nor serve the South African
people as a whole. Apartheid was instituted to promote systemic racism, financially and physically isolate the less desirable South Africans, and place all power into the hands of wealthy, white South Africans. Systematic oppression, financial instability, and government instituted segregation are more commonly recalled at the mention of apartheid, however, historians such as Crain Soudien attempts to rewrite the narrative by redirecting our attention to a lesser thought of outcome, community. According to Soudien, the political prisoners of Robben Island were able to develop a support system with another, while fulfilling educational pursuits and developing a strengthened sense of self all while fighting for their freedom. I am attempting to bring to light that the time the various gentlemen, including Nelson Mandela, spent in Robben island provided them with the opportunity to bounce ideas off of one another regarding their plans to help reunite and restructure the South African government and the people it governed.
