For full points, you must include your name and the name of your TA on your assignment. Assignment Analyze the following passage from Aristotle’s Politics : “But is there any one thus intended by nature to be a slave, and for whom such a condition is expedient and right, or rather is not all slavery a violation of nature? There is no difficulty in answering this question, on grounds both of reason and of fact. For that some should rule and others be ruled is a thing, not only necessary, but expedient; from the hour of their birth, some are marked out for subjection, others for rule. And whereas there are many kinds both of rulers and subjects, that rule is the better which is exercised over better subjects—for example, to rule over men is better than to rule over wild beasts. The work is better which is executed by better workmen; and where one man rules and another is ruled, they may be said to have a work. In all things which form a composite whole and which are made up of parts, whether continuous or discrete, a distinction between the ruling and the subject element comes to light. Such a duality exists in living creatures, but not in them only; it originates in the constitution of the universe; even in things which have no life, there is a ruling principle, as in musical harmony.” (Aristotle, Politics , Book I, Part 5) Answer the following 3 questions in the form of a short essay (500 words or less): 1. What does this passage say? Summarize the passage in one paragraph which explains Aristotle’s terminology. 2. How does Aristotle’s understanding of the “constitution of the universe” inform his inquiry into the state in the Politics ? To explain, you should employ and define Aristotle’s notion of “nature”.
3. How does this passage contribute to the idea that humans are naturally unequal? Be as specific as possible, and employ quotations from the text to explain. Students will submit their research papers to the TurnItIn website, where software scans the paper against a database which includes public websites, paper writing services, essays submitted to TurnItIn, and journal articles. The service then produces a report on the paper’s originality. The instructor will review the reports, and where necessary, the papers themselves. Assignments are not accessible to the public once submitted to TurnItIn, and you, as the author, retain ownership of your original material. Your work will be added to TurnItIn’s archive for comparison against subsequently submitted material, thus ensuring that your work is not plagiarized. For more information on TurnItIn, reasons for its use, and general policies, see the UBC Vice President Academic and Provost web site, at: http://www.vpacademic.ubc.ca/integrity/turnitin/index.htm Once added to a course, you will be able to submit your paper to the class file.
