Zaria McBride 3502838 Gov 2305 Midterm Paper The federal-level legislator I chose to do my midterm paper on is John Cornyn. He is a part of the republican party and one of the U.S. Senators to represent Texas along with Ted Cruz. He is a 71-year-old man and white as white gets. Additionally, he affiliates with the Christian religion but does not associate with any specific denomination. He has served in office for 21 years now and we do not share our party preference. John Cornyn serves on more than a few committees and many different subcommittees. The first committee John serves on is the finance committee. It states this committee has far- reaching jurisdiction, making it one of the most powerful and influential in the Senate which sounds like a big deal. The Finance Committee has jurisdiction over taxation, ports of entry, trade, tariffs, pensions, and infrastructure. It is also responsible for all programs under the Social Security Act, which includes Medicare and Medicaid. The subcommittees related to finance are the Subcommittee on International Trade, Customs, and Global Competitiveness, the Subcommittee on Energy, Natural Resources, and Infrastructure, & Subcommittee on Taxation and IRS Oversight. As if all of that isn’t enough, John Cornyn also serves on the Committee on the Judiciary oversees the administration of federal civil and criminal justice, and processes the nominations of judges for the U.S. Supreme Court and the lower federal courts. This also means he oversees the subcommittees of border security and immigration, the Constitution, criminal justice & counterterrorism, and intellectual property. Lastly, he serves on a select committee on intelligence. The most recent bill John Cornyn has decided to sponsor is the Meals for At-Risk Americans Act of 2023 which additionally has two democratic cosponsors. It is currently in the first stage of its process and was introduced in early October of this year. This bill was created to
Zaria McBride 3502838 amend the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008. This act was put into place about 15 years ago and its goal was to strengthen the agricultural economy, help achieve a fuller and more effective use of food abundance, provide for improved levels of nutrition among low-income households through a cooperative Federal-State program of food assistance, and more. This 2023 bill would like to mainly provide guidance and enhanced technical assistance for States seeking to establish a restaurant meals program under the supplemental nutrition assistance program. However, it only has a one percent chance of making it past the committee and a zero percent chance of being enacted. The public interest group I chose to compare and contrast is the National Education Association. While searching for bills that John Cornyn has recently sponsored, I noticed a heavy pattern of him sponsoring bills that have to do with the safety of children and issues concerning the youth as well. Additionally, his website, states that one of his legislative priorities is for safer schools and school security. The NEA’s mission and goal correlate with Coryn by hoping for a great public school for every student. However, the National Education Association has not endorsed John Cornyn and rates him with zero percent for a consecutive amount of years. This resulted in no surprise when I found that the NEA has not donated a penny to John Cornyn or any Republican recently. I don’t believe that this interest group has played a positive role in getting him elected but possibly a negative role due to them constantly rating him zero percent as a legislator. I, unfortunately, could not find a legislative scorecard for the National Educational Association. I definitely believe that the biggest marketable skill I developed was personal responsibility. In total complete honesty, it was extremely difficult for me to find the motivation to complete this paper, let alone finish it. However, I developed the skills to exhibit time
Zaria McBride 3502838 management by turning this in on time and showing attention to detail by reading the midterm instructions. The most challenging skill to implement was critical thinking. You may find that my answers to these questions aren’t my strongest critical thinking skills but, I truly believe I did what I could. This resulted in me believing that I could definitely continue developing my critical thinking skills. My social responsibility marketable skills and communication skills were far more developed than critical thinking in this paper due to my attempt to complete this assignment from 11:00 p.m. to 2:30 a.m.
